Creative Writing Workshop for High Schoolers
Class experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Like to write? No matter whether you answered YES, NOPE, or Meh- this class is for you! Creative writing helps us learn and like to write. This creative writing class will help you enjoy writing and build your writing skills. Each week, students are invited to become more proficient writers by writing. Most classes include at least 20 minutes of quiet writing time. Why? Because writing is the best way to learn how to write! I use creative writing prompts and exercises to help students...
Students will learn, practice, and play with creative writing. The aim of this class is to inspire writers to write, give them opportunities to share their writing, and offer tools to help them grow as writers.
I received my Secondary English teaching license in 2004. Since then, I have taught in public schools, private schools, and online. I currently teach ELL, ELA, and creative writing to students ages 4-84. I also homeschool my daughter. My teaching style is encouraging and creative. I want my students to learn how they learn best, to feel supported, and for reading and writing to be enjoyable.
Homework Offered
If students want to get the most out of this class, they will dedicate at least an hour a week to writing. They are welcome and encouraged to work on projects of their choice during our writing time. I will not be giving assignments, but rather suggestions.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I will assess learning during class discussions and help students work through any challenges.Grades Offered
2 files available upon enrollmentStudents will need something to write with a paper or a journal. Some sessions may offer activities where scissors, glue, and markers are needed. I'll let students know a week in advance if additional supplies are needed. I use Nearpod for many of my classes. If I am using a Nearpod presentation, a link to access the interactive lesson will be posted in the classroom. Parents will also receive a handout explaining how to use Nearpod. Students do not have to sign up for Nearpod to access the lesson.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Nearpod- I sometimes use Nearpod (a free website) in my classes to provide interactive ways for students to engage in the material. My lessons may include educational YouTube videos in the Nearpod lesson. Students can only see and engage with the videos and materials I choose. I guide them through the lesson. Nearpod also allows students to annotate the texts we're reading, listen to the text if they are auditory learners, and interact with each other through a collaborative board. These activities are only available during class and while I am on-site with them.
I use a variety of young adult literature and interviews with authors to help students learn about writing.
