US Grade 9 - 12
Like to write? No matter whether you answered YES, NOPE, or Meh- this class is for you! Creative writing helps us learn and like to write. This creative writing class will help you enjoy writing and build your writing skills. Each week, students are invited to become more proficient writers by writing. Most classes include at least 20 minutes of quiet writing time. Why? Because writing is the best way to learn how to write! I use creative writing prompts and exercises to help students find ideas. These exercises can also be used to add to already existing pieces. Students are welcome to bring pieces of writing they are working on or start something new. Writers will also be introduced to elements of writing, different authors, styles, and techniques. Class discussions and activities help us think about how we can incorporate these learnings into our writing. Writers of all abilities are invited to try their hand at writing in various genres and develop their style and voice. Class Structure- In each class, we'll free-write, play games, and use short, fun exercises to move our pens and minds. All activities are aimed at helping writers find ideas, create, edit, and revise their writing. Time will be provided for students to share their writing if they want to. Students will find my classroom is a place to have fun, practice, and not worry about being perfect! Typical Class Agenda- - Welcome Activity - Mini-lesson about writing - Writing exercises with time to write - Sharing (optional) - Closing activity- Goal setting Teaching Style- I believe in student-centered learning and in the importance of structure in a classroom. I set classroom agreements to help create a safe, fun, inspiring space for all students to feel supported, want to participate, and be able to learn. I encourage participation but do not force it. I use materials to help students connect and find interest. Interaction- I encourage participation throughout the class through both the chat and verbal. I make sure to answer all questions and call on all students who wish to participate. Students will interact with each other through discussion and when sharing their writing. Prior Experience- Students do not need prior knowledge or experience with creative writing to learn and/or enjoy this class.
Learning Goals
Students will learn, practice, and play with creative writing. The aim of this class is to inspire writers to write, give them opportunities to share their writing, and offer tools to help them grow as writers.

Parental Guidance
Nearpod- I sometimes use Nearpod (a free website) in my classes to provide interactive ways for students to engage in the material. My lessons may include educational YouTube videos in the Nearpod lesson. Students can only see and engage with the videos and materials I choose. I guide them through the lesson. Nearpod also allows students to annotate the texts we're reading, listen to the text if they are auditory learners, and interact with each other through a collaborative board. These activities are only available during class and while I am on-site with them.
Supply List
Students will need something to write with a paper or a journal. Some sessions may offer activities where scissors, glue, and markers are needed. I'll let students know a week in advance if additional supplies are needed. I use Nearpod for many of my classes. If I am using a Nearpod presentation, a link to access the interactive lesson will be posted in the classroom. Parents will also receive a handout explaining how to use Nearpod. Students do not have to sign up for Nearpod to access the lesson.
