This is one of my one-time classes that is part of my Crack the Code and Read Like a Hero series that focuses on the Simple View of Reading, specifically the decoding side, from the Science of Reading research.
The Simple View of Reading is:
Decoding (D) x Language Comprehension (LC) = Reading Comprehension (RC)
During our time together we will warm up with learning what a syllable is by counting syllables in words. Then we will learn about 1 syllable words with the Vowel Team Syllable pattern. We will learn that all syllables need a vowel and in this pattern the 2 vowels together make one long sound. We will also learn about Diphthongs. This is a special type of vowel team where the vowels "slide". We will practice these sounds by blending them with consonant sounds.
Next, we will learn how to label (decode) the Vowel Team syllable so we can recognize it and know what vowel sound to use when located in words. This is a foundational skill needed to be able to decode multi syllable words in the future. At the end of class we will play Roll and Read to practice reading our new syllable type.

I will not teach this class if I have less than 2 students enrolled. If my schedule permits, I will re-list the class to give it more time for students to enroll and I can transfer your student to that class, or I can cancel it. I will talk with you before I make that decision.
However, THIS CLASS CAN BE MADE INTO A 1:1 SESSION FOR YOUR LEARNER FOR AN ADDITIONAL $10. Just contact me with your date and time and I will do my best to accommodate you.

Students will learn what a syllable is.
Students will learn that all syllables have at least one vowel sound.
They will be able to locate the vowel in the word, and decide which sound the vowel will make.
They will be able label and recognize the pattern for the Vowel Team syllable..Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will need to know the letters and their sounds along with the short and long vowel sounds for them to be successful in this class. We will use some 2 and 3 letter blends along with digraphs(ch, sh, th, wh).
Supply List
Roll and Read game that is provided Students will need something to write with such as a white board and marker or paper and marker. White boards and markers work best if possible because it is easier to see on camera.
