US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
This 4 lesson self paced course is a deeper dive into my one-time class, Phonics Instruction for the Closed Syllable in my Crack the Code series. This class includes extra activities for letter and sound work and learning about High Frequency words that break the syllable type rule. My Crack the Code series focuses on the decoding side of the Simple View of Reading, which is included in the Science of Reading research. The Simple View of Reading is: Decoding (D) x Language Comprehension (LC) = Reading Comprehension (RC) In this course, we will start building the bridge to reading comprehension by focusing on the basics of decoding. Once they have learned about a syllable type, they will go on word hunts in their favorite books and practice using their new decoding skills. This will help transfer their decoding skills to real life reading. In each lesson, students will gain a deeper understanding of the Closed Syllable type (D). Students will also be introduced the steps to syllabicating multi syllable words. I will use an interactive classroom. to post the videos. A video will be posted on how to use the classroom. Each lesson will include a sequence guide to help navigate the recommended order to complete the activities and videos. The guide will also explain any extra activities to enhance the lessons. I provide extra activities and/or games each week for even more practice. Please feel free to message me with questions, I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible. I am in the Central time zone. Remember that reading struggles and enrichments do not have age limits, so if your learner is outside the age range, please reach out to me for more information about the class if trying to decide if it is right for your learner.
Learning Goals
Students will be taught the closed syllable type and how to recognize it quickly. Once they can recognize it, they will know how to use the correct vowel sound when decoding unknown words in everyday life.
Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Review Consonant, Vowels, and Digraphs
In this lesson learners will get a chance to review consonant, single and in blends, short vowel sounds and digraphs. This activity is important for letter/sound fluency that will be needed to crack the code. The trigraphs -tch and -dge will also be introduced.
Lesson 2:
Let's Review some More and Add Ending Blends
In the lesson learners will be introduced to ending blends with a focus on the -ng and -nk blends.
Lesson 3:
The Blending Board and Dictation
In this lesson learners will apply their new and old skills in reading nonsense words and spelling through words and sentences.
Lesson 4:
Introduction to Syllabication
This lesson is one of my favorites to teach. In this lesson learners will learn the steps to syllabicate multi syllable words. When learners can do this, a whole new world of reading opens up to them.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Arkansas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
In my 28+ years of teaching I have been trained in all kinds of different ways to teach students to read. This most recent method of teaching students to understand how and why letters make different sounds when put with other letters and placed in certain parts of the words has completely changed my way of thinking. I have seen huge gains in the students I work with in my brick and mortar school by teaching students the syllable types and how those syllable types work together to make bigger words.
