Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
Give a child pencil and paper and ask them to write a story, and they usually have a hard time coming up with a topic. Give them a doodle page and ask them to draw a picture, and they will jump right in and get busy. Now, let's turn that doodle into a story! This class works great for reluctant and excited writers.

This 2 day class if for beginning writers ages 6-8. I will post 2 doodle pages and the students will choose one to work on in class. They can use the other one to create for fun at another time.

On day 1, we will talk about what illustrators do and look at some illustrations in a couple of books. We will then look at our doodle pages and discuss what the doodles could be turned in to. I am always amazed at all the different things students can think of! I will give them time to start their doodle illustrations then share with the other learners. We will then talk about what good authors do and start working on our story map.

Between day 1 and day 2, students will be expected to complete their doodle illustration and story map.

Day 2 will start off by students sharing their completed doodle illustrations and story maps. We will talk about good ways to hook the reader by writing a good first sentence, and about how to wrap up a good story. Students will be given time to write and ask questions during class. We will wrap up day 2 with reading our stories to each other.

Students will be encouraged to take a picture of their completed Doodle Write and post it in the class for us all to enjoy.

Students need to be able to write basic sentences in order to complete this class. I will not focus on incorrect spelling. Students will be encouraged to get their thoughts down on paper and not worry about it being perfect. They will be encouraged to work on that outside of class. I will also encourage them to complete the second Doodle Write and post.

This class could be cancelled if the minimum number of 3 students do not enroll. I will be in contact with you about options if this is the case.
