In this 1:1 writing class a student will learn how to use the writing process. We will create a journal to collect topics, brainstorms, and quick writes. The student will be taught different types of writing such as narratives, expository, opinion and even poetry. As we work through the process for each type of writing, students will work on sentence and paragraph formation and grammar. For narrative writing, the student will recount an event in their life while we work on sequencing, including details that describe actions, thoughts and feelings, and use temporal words creating event order and closure. For expository writing, the student will research a chosen topic, use facts and definitions to develop points and provide a concluding statement or paragraph. For opinion writing, the student will be given a few topics in which they will form an opinion through conversation and research. They will learn how to state their opinion , supply reasons that support their opinion and provide a concluding statement or paragraph. Poetry is always a favorite. I will introduce the student to several different types of poems: Haiku, Acrostic, Cinquain, and a few more. We will read some poetry samples and write our own. This class is set up in a writer's workshop format. First, we will spend time doing quick writes and working on writing craft. Once we have a few pieces to choose from, the student will pick their favorite to take through the writing process. If a learner needs to focus on one of the components of the writing process more than another, such as editing (grammar and mechanics), we can spend extra time on this step since it is a 1:1 class. I will meet the student's needs as a writer.
Learning Goals
The student will learn how to use the writing process to create polished pieces of writing while working on craft and structure.
