Class Experience

During this fun, creative art class, students will learn how to sketch, draw and watercolor paint two axolotls along with me. We will discuss what axolotls look like, and begin with drawing simple shapes. I will use an overhead camera to demonstrate each step of the process. The axolotls will be drawn in a semi-realistic manner, and look super cute! I will discuss some of the elements of art such as line, texture, and color. During the second half of class, students will color in their axolotls with watercolor paints. Shading and lighting will be discussed as part of the painting process.

Students will be allowed to be creative in this class and create an artwork that is unique to them. Therefore, if students would like to add background items or other underwater elements in their artwork, that is ok! I will include a discussion of the axolotl's native habitat, which students can add to their art. I love hearing student ideas, and students may ask questions and comment on the project. Often, students share their ideas and inspire each other in this way!

At the end of the art class, students will be asked to share their art to the group. I will give meaningful, enthusiastic feedback to each student, and model how to give kind comments to students about their artwork. If students choose to not share, that is also ok.

Please be prepared with watercolor paper, pencil, eraser, watercolor brushes, fresh water, and watercolor paints. Optional: paper towels and smock.

Hello! I am an Art Educator and Artist. I love teaching art to all ages, especially elementary school and middle school. My art classes include watercolor painting, acrylic painting, drawing, elementary art projects that work on skill building, and learning about art history through fun projects about artists - including Non-Western and Women artists.

I teach art from my heart and aim to build self esteem in my students through the arts. I challenge students to find their inner artist through creativity and self expression. I believe in the process of art, individual expression, creative thinking, and problem solving. Each art project is designed to develop technical skills, artistic interpretation, and unique artwork. We have lots of fun while making artwork and socializing is encouraged during my art classes.

My art background began as a child. I loved to learn how to paint or draw anything and everything. After receiving a BFA in Graphic Design, I became a children's textile designer in the fashion industry in NYC. While in New York, I attended fine arts classes at the Art Student's League and The New School. I moved to New York State's Hudson Valley, and am inspired daily by the landscapes and nature around me. I also am inspired by my pet cats, who may visit the classroom once in a while.
