Take the summer stop motion animation movie challenge!

In this 5 session class, Students will learn animation techniques to help convince their audience that their action figures, bricks, stuffed animals, art supplies, food, clay (etc.) are alive! They will build a set and characters that work well with animation, plan their storyboard, learn and implement essential animation techniques and visual effects, complete a final animation with clarity, add sound (voice, music, sound effects), and share their final works with others. Each day builds upon the previous one. Students are responsible for watching the Outschool videos of the classes they miss.

PREREQUISITES
No previous experience is necessary for this class, this class is open to all levels of learners. However, coming to class prepared is essential to your student’s success. Please make certain to read through the “SUPPLY LIST” section below. You will receive detailed instructions in the OUTSCHOOL CLASSROOM on how to set up a simple and affordable animation stand once you sign up for this class.

HOW THE CLASS IS RUN
During class students will watch technique videos and animated video shorts, view live demonstrations, work on their projects, ask questions, request and offer feedback, and have the option to show their progress. Students who complete homework will get the most out of class and will build positive habits for creating independent work. Feedback is offered when requested in an affirming and informative manner, designed to showcase each student’s strengths in front of the class and further their success in their project.

CLASS CURRICULUM
See class syllabus for the curriculum outline.

(NOTE: check the SUPPLY LIST section below to prepare for session 1 by building a simple and affordable animation station).

Learning Goals

Students will learn a process for how to plan and animate a short animated movie that they can then apply to their own future independent projects. The emphasis will be on progress rather than perfection and in taking pride in their accomplishments.

Syllabus

5 Lessons
over 1 Week
Lesson 1:
ANIMATION EXPLORATION
We will start off the class by learning and experimenting with animation techniques. Students will learn the importance of animating with clarity and simplicity. They will receive instruction on common animation techniques and will be given resources on how to animate basic movements (walks, runs, jumps, flips, etc), specific movements (parkour, gymnastics, breakdancing, ice skating, combat, etc) and acting (showing feelings, pantomime gestures, talking, and lipsync).
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
BRAINSTORMING AND PLANNING FOR YOUR ANIMATION
Next we will cover how to build characters, props, and backgrounds that are best suited for animation. We will explore limit setting and simplicity that can help with completing a movie on time. This includes designing an animation set that is a reasonable size and can be completed in a limited amount of time and that has props which are out of the way so they are not knocked over during animation. We will cover how to build background and prop parts that can be animated.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
STORYBOARDING AND ANIMATION
Now it’s time to plan your final story. We will cover how to use a storyboard including making rough sketches of important moments in the story (similar to drawing a comic book), plan ahead by drawing camera angles to show the focus in each moment (zoom in, medium shot, full shot, and establishing shot), plot development in case students want to create a typical story structure (not required), and how to use limited dialogue so they can match the character’s actions to words.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
ANIMATE YOUR MOVIE!
With a set, characters, and a story plan students are now ready to animate their final movie! Before starting their movie they will watch a brief presentation that encourages patience, taking your time, and showing detail for each part of the animation. It’s common to feel excited about a movie and to rush the process, so emphasis is given to slowing down the process and showing as much detail as possible. Example comparisons are also given.
