WATCH THE CLASS COMMERCIAL TO SEE ANIMATED SAMPLES! HOW THIS SELF PACED CLASS IS RUN This is a Self Paced class, there is NO live instruction. Students learn through pre-recorded video and direct interaction 1 on 1 with the teacher. Each week students will be given a variety of fun animation exercises to practice and a weekly final project. Students can spend a few hours to complete the basic work, or a lot of more time if they are really passionate about their projects. They can ask for help during the week, and when they turn in their work I respond with video feedback where I draw on their video and offer support and ideas for improvement. My turn around for responses is usually 24 hours or sooner. I am very thorough in my videos and take great care to make sure my students get the support they need. CLASS DESCRIPTION Have you ever seen a brick animation movie online and wanted to make your own? Then this class is for you! In this 4 session class, students will learn how to make an animation workstation complete with a tablet or phone, set, and lighting. They will then practice fundamental animation principles (Timing and Spacing, Slow in and Slow out, Arcs, Follow Through and Overlapping Action, Exaggeration, and Anticipation) in fun and experimental ways. Next they will bring their mini-figures and/or other characters to life with animation lessons on basic and personality walks, body mechanics (run, jump, parkour, gymnastics, breakdancing), acting, and even lip sync. Their final project will be an animation of their choosing based on their storyboard planning with sound effects and voices. Stop motion animation incorporates the skills of character development, storytelling, planning, and basic math and physics. Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Setting up the animation workspace and animation basics.
Students will gather supplies and set up an animation workspace complete with a phone or tablet stand, set, and lighting. They will then learn how to use the Stop Motion Studio app fundamentals, and then will apply their knowledge to an experimental animation.
Lesson 2:
Animation basics: Learning 6 animation principles.
Using their animation workstation students will learn about and explore animating 6 animation principles. These principles are Timing and Spacing, Slow in and Slow out, Arcs, Anticipation, Follow Through and Overlapping Action, and Exaggeration. Each hands-on experiential lesson builds upon the previous lesson. Then they can create an animation where they combine as many concepts as they can that is playful and unstructured.
Lesson 3:
Animation body mechanics:
Students will now study body mechanics (walk, run, jump, breakdance, parkour, gymnastics, and more) as well as special effects. They can choose any type of brick character to animate with. There are a large variety of videos to learn from. They will have the option to create a short animation combining what they have learned.
Lesson 4:
Acting, Storyboarding, and finishing your animation:
In this final session students will learn about pantomime acting, acting to match dialogue, lip sync, facial expression changes, and how to add sound effects and voices. They will also have the chance to create a storyboard, a set, and animate a final short animation.
