Class Experience

This class is designed to give children an introductory view of some of the basic concepts and methods of animation.

We start at the very beginning and it is not necessary for learners to have any experience making animations before this class.

We will be going over some of the very basic concepts and ideas that are important to learning animation.

We will find the answer the question, what is animation?
How is animation made?
And what are some different techniques for creating animation?

The class is primarily lecture based and we will be discussing the ideas, looking at real world examples, watching animation clips and finally giving children the opportunity to experiment and create on their own through guided exercises. Children are highly encouraged to participate in class discussion and ask questions when they need.

In the class we will be exploring mostly traditional and 2d animation techniques although we may be watching examples from a variety of sources. Children are allows to create their animations on paper or through an app. Please see material list for more details.

Class outline:
Week 1: hand drawn animation
Week 2: flipbook animation
Week 3: stop motion
Week 4: computer animation

This is an introductionaly class where we present the different types of animation available so students can find the one that interests them most.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Brian and I am an artist and illustrator from Los Angeles, California. I am a classically trained in fine art and animation. In addition to making art I really enjoy teaching youth and helping them to develop their own unique form of creativity.

I have a number of years teaching and working with youth in various after school programs. I truly believe to that learning should be fun and I strive to provide an environment that is enriching, safe, and creatively nurturing. Students will be encouraged to express themselves artistically and to add their own imagination to the lessons.

Currently, I offer daily and weekly, cartooning courses. These are ongoing classes and the lessons evolve as course progresses, so children that wish to repeat the class will have new material to work from. These are entry level classes designed for anyone with an interest in drawing. All skill levels are welcome. Classes are non-competitive and each student is encouraged to do their own personal best. I believe that students can learn a lot from drawing with each other. In these classes students will have the opportunity to learn from myself but also each other as well.

In addition, I will be offering limited one time classes. This is a good way to test out the course and see if your child would be interested in one of the longer classes. These classes are also a option for tutoring if your child has specific drawing goals. If your child has special needs please reach out and let me know before the first class so I can make any necessary adjustments.
