This class will focus on applying music theory concepts to real musical excerpts. Each session will analyse a different piece of music, or part of a longer piece composed for a string quartet or other small ensemble. We will listen to the music in small segments, and focus on analysing the written score, including elements such as notating the chords and cadences used, and discussing the texture and structure of the music, including dynamics and interactions between the four instruments. Each session will focus on different excerpts and elements, so learners can join at any time. The score and annotations will be shared on the screen during class, and learners do not need to bring/print copies ahead of time. Class will involve some discussion and question-and-answer time, and learners will be involved in contributing to the group analysis of the music, with guidance as appropriate. The pieces selected will often be learner-directed, taking requests with teacher guidance if needed, with an aim of covering a range of composers and styles across different weeks. There is not a pre-set schedule, as each group may choose different pieces of music or composers to work on. Learners should have some pre-existing familiarity with music (must be able to read notes in treble and/or bass clef, and understand key signatures), but intermediate-advanced level music theory concepts will be taught and explained during the sessions as appropriate to each piece. The class is suitable for musicians and non-musicians alike, and would be helpful for anyone wanting to work towards composing their own music for multiple instruments.
