What’s included
1 live meeting
45 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
1-2 hours per week. Optional - homework will be assigned if the learner/family would like an assignment.Class Experience
**Please contact me to request a session if you don't see a suitable slot available - custom longer or shorter length sessions are also available on request** In this ongoing private class, learners will work on a bespoke curriculum of tasks and materials introducing the foundational knowledge of psychology and/or neuroscience. This will include a wide range of topics, from the building block cells and structures that make up the brain and the nervous system, through to social influences on people's choices. The class structure is flexible to the interests of each learner, but is likely to include elements such as lecture and discussion, a "teach me your assigned reading" approach, quiz questions, guided notes, essay mind-mapping, and collaborative diagram-drawing/labelling. Different approaches also suit different topics - so you don't have to commit to just one session style! If there is an activity that you like or dislike, I will take this into account when planning your sessions. This class is perfect for learners who are interested in Psychology, Neuroscience, Biology, Anatomy, Medicine, or Psychobiology. For Neuroscience, basic biology knowledge would be helpful, but you don't need any specific Neuroscience knowledge to take this class. (If you have studied your subject before, please let me know so that I can take your previous knowledge into account when planning your sessions). An example schedule outline: - Neuron - Ions and membranes - Action potentials - Synaptic structures - Neurotransmitter synthesis and storage - Neurotransmitter action - Epigenetics - Anatomical terminology - Brain anatomy (lobes) - Brain anatomy (limbic system) - Techniques for imaging the brain - Visual system - Somatosensory system - Auditory system - Taste and smell - Neural Basis of Movement - Neural Control of Stress - Motivation and Reward systems
Learning Goals
- Understand fundamental principles of neuroscience / psychology
- Understand how neuroscience links to mental processes and behaviour
- Critically evaluate psychological theories and concepts
