Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
For this class students need to know addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This course can be for the student who is new to fractions or for the one who needs a review. This course covers everything concerning fractions. The subtopics are as follows: What is a fraction? What is a numerator and a denominator? What is an equivalent fraction? Identifying a fraction in a number line. How to simplify fractions and compare them. How to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. How to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions. How to multiply and divide fractions. And lastly, how to express fraction as a percent. I will teach using Power Point slides, sending an optional worksheet that will be solved during class to help them follow along. I might use also the Zoom Whiteboard and annotation tools. In the first week they will need to cut the fraction strips I am sending or make them on a sheet of paper to help them visualize how a fraction is equivalent and how it can be represented on a number line. This multi-day course has 8 meetings and we will meet twice per week. Below is the itinerary for each week and meeting.

Week 1
Meeting 1 We will go over 'What is a fraction, numerator, denominator and what is an equivalent fraction.' In this lesson students
will be able to understand how to write a fraction in a number line. They will need to cut the fraction strips I will send and
find equivalent fractions by reasoning about their size. They will also learn how to identify an equivalent fraction using
                     multiplication and division.
Meeting 2 We will learn how to write fractions in the simplest form and how to compare fractions using models and the fraction
                     strips.
Week 2
Meeting 3 What is a mixed number and improper fraction and how to convert a mixed number to an improper fraction. We will
solve together the optional worksheet I will send for this meeting and I will let them solve problems on their own to check
                     their comprehension.
Meeting 4 'How to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.' I will show them models with Power Point slides, so they
can visualize and have a better understanding on fractions and we will solve together the worksheet.
Week 3
Meeting 5 'How to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.' They will learn how to find a common denominator and
then be able to solve the problems like they did before with like denominators.
Meeting 6 Students will improve their understanding of fractions and they will learn how to add and subtract mixed numbers.
Week 4
Meeting 7 In this meeting students will learn how to multiply fractions and mixed numbers.
Meeting 8 Students will learn how to divide fractions and how a percent can be expressed as a fraction with a denominator of 100.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers and how to express fractions as a percent.
