What's included

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework will be completed by each student individually. It will be a worksheet of problems similar to those covered in the lesson. The homework will take 30-60 minutes per lesson, so 1-2 hours per week total. Each student must post the work-out solution to one problem in the classroom for each homework set. The student may choose any problem not already posted by another student. The solutions to the previous lesson will be provided so that students can check their work.
Assessment
At the end of units 6 and 7, a quiz will be posted. At the conclusion of Unit 8, a test covering all of the course material will be provided. The quizzes and test must be submitted no later than a week after they were posted. If you need additional flexibility in the due dates, please let me know. However, all work must be submitted prior to the last day of class. Feedback and full solutions to the assessments with be provided to each student, along with a percentage grade. Please show your work to receive partial credit, even if the answer is incorrect. Being able to see your thinking process also helps me give you better feedback.
Grading

Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
This class is perfect for a student beginning the study of algebra, as well as for a student who needs to review algebra concepts. To be successful in this class, students must be proficient in working with positive and negative integers, decimals, and fractions, as well as solving and graphing algebraic equations. While not necessary if the student has the prerequisite skills, the classes Algebra Skills-Distributing, Solving Equations, Proportions and Algebra Skills - Solving Inequalities and Graphing Linear Equations are recommended prior to this class.

This is a flexible class with no mandatory live class meetings, allowing students to work at a time that is convenient to them. Lesson materials will be posted twice a week, becoming available on the day listed below. Assignments (homework, quizzes, and test) must be submitted by the due date. If you want to receive an overall course grade, all assignments must be completed.

This class will cover the following topics:
Word Problems
-Distance, rate, time (Week 1 Monday)
-Mixture (Week 1 Wednesday)
-Work (Week 2 Monday)

Systems of Equations and Inequalities
-Solve systems of equations by graphing (Week 2 Wednesday)
-Solve systems of equations by substitution (Week 3 Monday)
-Solve systems of equations by elimination (Week 3 Wednesday)
-Graphing systems of inequalities (Week 4 Monday)

Exponents
-Properties of exponents (Week 4 Wednesday)
Test on all concepts will be posted on Monday of Week 5 and must be submitted by that Friday.
Each student will receive individual feedback on test and their complete grade report by Sunday of Week 5.

Each topic has a video lesson and homework assignments that will be posted on the stated day. The videos will explain the relevant concepts and work through several examples. The homework assignment includes practice problems of the concepts taught in the lesson. To encourage learner-to-learner interaction between students and allow them to help each other grow in understanding the concepts, each student must post the work-out solution to one problem in the classroom for each homework set. The student may choose any problem not already posted by another student. Students can offer positive feedback to each other and ask questions if they don't agree with the solution. The complete solutions to the homework assignment will be posted with the next lesson for the student to self-check.

At the end of the Word Problems units and the Systems unit, a quiz will be posted. Students will have two days to submit the quiz. Each student will receive a personal video with feedback on each quiz.
A test on all concepts will be posted on Friday of Week 4. No new lesson will be posted on Monday of Week 5. Students will have to complete the test and submit the test by Wednesday of Week 5. By Friday of Week 5, the student will receive the grade and detailed feedback on the test.

The next recommended course is Algebra Skills-Polynomials, Factoring, Quadratic and Radical Functions.

Learning Goals

Students will gain a solid understanding of the basic topics covered in the third quarter of Algebra 1.

Other Details

Pre-Requisites
Proficiency in operations with positive and negative integers, decimals, and fractions, as well as solving and graphing algebraic equations is required. My class Algebra 1 (First Semester) is recommended prior to this class.
Supply List
Students should have paper and a pencil while watching the videos, so that they can work out the practice problems. It is also helpful to have a printer if you want to print out the worksheets, quizzes, and tests. However, that is not necessary. I will also accept the quizzes and tests written out on paper. Just make sure that the problems are clearly numbered.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

As an experienced and certified classroom instructor, I have expertise in teaching a range of math courses, spanning from pre-algebra to calculus. In addition to my classroom experience, I have also provided individual tutoring to students for numerous years. This experience has allowed me to gain insight into the common misconceptions that students encounter when grappling with math concepts. In order to assist students in overcoming these challenges, I structure my lessons in a manner that addresses these misconceptions and helps students avoid making similar errors.
