Class Experience

Students will learn to add fractions with uncommon denominators. They will use a multiples chart to find the lowest common denominator. I will first model how to draw the chart and demonstrate how to use the chart. I will demonstrate step by step on how to set up the problem and chart on my whiteboard, showing how to solve the entire problem. I will complete a few problems with the students writing down the steps as we work out the problem together. After a few practice problems, I will ask the students to try one on their own. I will invite students to show/explain how they completed the problem to repeat back the steps on how they solved it. Learners who have not memorized their multiplication facts can use a multiplication chart, skip counting, or counting up from a known multiplication fact to assist them with their multiples chart.

Learning Goals

Students will improve finding the lowest common denominator, as well as solving addition fraction problems with uncommon denominators.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Miss Kelly and I love to learn new things and teach children to love learning too! I will be providing classes in elementary level math and reading skills. Reading skills will include phonics skills, decoding, drawing conclusions, making inferences, analyzing characters, and finding the main idea. I enjoy teaching students reading skills by being enthusiastic and creative. I model how to read fluently and how to think about what I'm reading. We would also work together making predictions, answering questions, and making mental movies in our minds to aid in comprehension. I also enjoy teaching math skills and finding various methods to teach math concepts. I utilize hands on instruction when possible, as well as utilizing graphic organizers to help children visualize math concepts. I feel it's important for children to continuously practice skills to maintain and build upon them. Teaching should be fun and engaging as well as a bit challenging. Students should be taught that it is okay to make mistakes and to use those mistakes as learning tools. They should be comfortable to take academic risks to expand their thinking. I've been a special education teacher, teaching 3rd-5th grade, for about 8 years. I feel great pride in helping my students learn and grow and to always try their best. I use my personal goals as motivators and share my struggles of achieving those goals with my students so that they can see how we all have things that are difficult. Over the last few years, I've been working on improving my running skills to improve my time at races. I've completed two half marathons, and several 5K races. I've been learning a lot and I continue to grow as a runner working on improving my form and my long distance running. I look forward to helping more students improve their math and reading skills and hope that they develop the love for learning like I have.
