Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Work on different letters in cursive each week - with a Harry Potter theme!

Each week, learners will be given clues as to what the Harry Potter word of the week will be. It may be a character's name, animal, spell, object, class subject, or theme. Learners will each have a chance to guess the word of the day before the answer is revealed! This is a great way for Harry Potter enthusiasts to learn cursive and practice their handwriting!
This class takes a laid back approach to learning cursive, while we answer various Harry Potter questions/Would You Rather's?/share Harry Potter thoughts throughout the lesson.

Learning cursive is great for your brain! Research has shown that writing in cursive stimulates different parts of the brain than writing in print or typing. Writing in cursive also increases fine motor skills, as well as helps readers learn how to pronounce letter blends. There is something so valuable in being able to hold a handwritten note - something that you just cannot do with text messages. For example, I still have many letters written to me from my grandmother in cursive. Those letters are treasures to me, and handwritten letters provide something tangible that just can't be found digitally.

Using the D'Nealian Handwriting method (where the letters are slanted slightly to the right as opposed to straight up and down), students will learn the fundamentals of writing lowercase letters in cursive. Learners will work on the joining strokes required to turn most manuscript letters into cursive. We will warm up with practicing these strokes before each letter. Through repetition and practicing the fundamentals, your learner will see progress in their cursive writing. Since most letters are made with one continuous stroke, children using the D'Nealian method establish a smooth, rhythmic flow of writing from the beginning. Continuously practicing the basics will lead to beautiful handwriting!

This class is designed for learners who are learning cursive for the first time, or those would just like some extra practice.
The goal is for learners to greatly improve their personal legibility - practice does not make perfect, but rather progress.

Each week, learners will be taught how to write a group letters. We will work on individual letters and/or short words.
In each lesson, learners will have a chance to share their progress with others, converse with their peers, and practice the kind skill of cheering for the success of others.
There will be time for Harry Potter discussion throughout the class as well!

Letters are taught by similarity in formation - handwriting is much more meaningful to children when they are able to say, "Look what I wrote in cursive! This says Snape!", for example.
I look forward to helping you grow and improve!
