Kindergarten & 1st grade students who enroll in this class will review letters and practice phonics skills. (Advanced preschool students are welcomed too.) We'll practice the "sounds" each letter makes with our fun and engaging phonics song. CVC words and sentences will be reviewed every Monday, then silent E partners (or double vowel words like rain) will be learned. Every week, the vowels and their sounds will also be reviewed. We'll blend two consonants with the vowels using our blend ladders and ferris wheel to prepare for reading CCVC (consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant) words which will be read each week. Students will learn to "DECODE" and read words in this class through phonics. We do not memorize words except for Sight Words/ High Frequency Words. Sight words will be introduced each week with our sight words songs! We practice reading and writing from the Dolch words list which is a common list of the 52 most common words found in Kindergarten level children's books. Students will learn to recognize and read sight words through sentences and sight word exercises. Math skills include identifying and writing numbers of the week. A new math concept will be introduced each week such as counting to 100 by tens, counting to 100 by 5s, adding, subtracting, identifying coins, telling time on the hour and half hour, and counting with ordinal numbers -1st-10th. Worksheets will also be made available each week for phonics, sight words, math skills, and writing words. This class will have fun songs, chants, and review games. With a max of six students, each student will have an opportunity to engage and answer questions. Daily class time includes the following: Monday: the class will review the A-Z phonics blends; practice vowel sounds, CVC words, then add the silent E, review the consonant letters of the week (ie- bl), write the letters, and review the sound blend. Sight word will be introduced as well as the number family of the week. Tuesday: we'll practice identifying the missing vowel in CCVC words, match beginning sounds with pictures, and begin blending the consonant, consonant and vowel (ie- bla, ble, bli, blo, blu). We'll also work on the math concept for the week. Wednesday: Our lesson includes reviewing the blends and adding the ending consonant sound to begin decoding words (ie- blo+b= blob). Students will write words for the blends of the week and review sight words. Independent math skills will be reviewed by each student. Thursdays: we'll practice sounding out and reading CCVC words from the letter blends we worked on during the week, read phrases or sentences with our sight word, word families, and finish/review the math skill for the week. Here is an example of our class time each week: 1. Learn the "br" blend: write the letters and practice the blend of the week sound. We'll also practice vowel sounds; learn to write the "br" with the vowels and practice phonics sounds with blend ladders. Count and write numbers 1-10; add with 1, sums up to 5. CCVC words include: "brag, brim, brat." Sight word for the week: "be" 2. Learn the "cl" blend: write the letters and practice the blend of the week sound. We'll also practice vowel sounds; learn to write the "cl" with the vowels and practice phonics sounds with blend ladders. Count and write numbers 10-20; add with 2, sums up to 5. CCVC words include: "clap, clam, clip." Sight word for the week: "came". 3. Learn the "st" blend: write the letters and practice the blend of the week sound. We'll also practice vowel sounds; learn to write the "st" with the vowels and practice phonics sounds with blend ladders. Count and write numbers 20-30; add with 1, sums up to 10. CCVC words include: "stat, step, stop." Sight word for the week: "say". 4. Learn the "fl" blend: write the letters and practice the blend of the week sound. All videos are also made available for review by enrolled students only. *Please note: if only one to two students attend class, classes may end up to five minutes early.*

Parental Guidance
With young students, a parent nearby can help in case a child needs assistance or help staying attentive. Also, please help your student with the mute and unmute functions in zoom. I do mute students if backgrounds become noisy, but I cannot unmute students in the classroom.
Please note that Outschool policy states only enrolled students can be seen on camera. Parents/Adults supervising students can help but must remain off camera.
Supply List
At times, video and songs will be screen shared from Youtube. Students do not need to have a youtube account to view the videos. Throughout the course of this class, we will use the following. Any variation of the following is fine. 1. Worksheets from the class page are used in each class. If printing the worksheets is not possible, a white board or tracing paper is just as helpful. You can downloaded PreK tracing paper for free. 2. A pencil with a preschool/kindergarten grip will also be helpful for correct finger holding. These can be found among school supplies at stores like Target and Walmart. 3. Basic and big crayons- NEEDED in EVERY CLASS. 4. Small items like coins or blocks for counting

I have been in education for over 20 years and have had the privilege of teaching little ones how to read and write. I'm thrilled to teach students how to read through phonics! When foundational phonics skills are learned, students learn to love reading! They'll enjoy reading sentences, word families, and short stories in this class.
