Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
This is a class for students who are READY TO READ and have learned their letters and phonics sounds. If you are looking for our first semester class (level 1) which prepares students for this class and moves them to the ready to read level, you can find it through this link. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out. I'm always happy to help and want to make sure we place students in the correct class. Happy Learning, Teacher Lisa

****Kindergarten and First grade students who enroll in this class will review writing letters and practice phonics. (Advanced pre-school students are welcome too). Students should be able to identify each letter for this class, understand that all letters make a sound, and know most letter sounds. We'll practice the "sounds" each letter makes with our fun and engaging phonics song. Every week, the vowels and their sounds will also be reviewed. We'll blend a consonant with the vowels using our blend ladders and ferris wheel to prepare for reading CVC (consonants-vowel-consonant) words which will be read each week. Students will learn to "DECODE" and read words in this class through phonics. We do not memorize words except for Sight Words/ High Frequency Words.

Sight words will be introduced each week with our sight words songs! We practice reading and writing from the Dolch words list which is a common list of the 52 most common words found in children's books. Students will learn to recognize and read sight words through sentences and sight word exercises.

Math skills include identifying and writing numbers of the week. A new math concept will be introduced each week such as counting to 100 by tens, adding, subtracting, identifying coins, telling time on the hour, and counting with ordinal numbers -1st-10th.

Worksheets will also be made available each week for phonics, sight words, math skills, and writing words.

This class will have fun songs, chants, and review games. With a max of six students, each student will have an opportunity to engage and answer questions. *At times, youtube videos and/or songs will be used to help reinforce a lesson.

*This Kindergarten & Beyond class is a 2nd semester Kindergarten curriculum designed for both Preschool and Kindergarten students. First grade students are also welcome! The class will be presented with slides so students will easily be able to participate and get a clear understanding of the material taught. All recordings are also made available for review.

*If your student is not quite ready for blending and reading, please consider the Jr.Kindergarten full curriculum class which will prepare students to move into this class when they are ready!

Daily class time includes the following:
Monday: the class will review the A-Z phonics song; practice vowel sounds, review the consonant letter of the week (ie- Tt), write the letter, and review sound of the letter. Sight word will be introduced as well as the number family of the week.

Tuesday: we'll practice identifying the missing vowel in CVC words, match beginning sounds with pictures, and begin blending the consonant and vowel (ie- ta, te, ti, to, tu). We'll also work on the math concept for the week.

Wednesday: Our lesson includes reviewing the blends and adding the ending consonant sound to begin decoding words (ie- tab). Students will write words for the letter of the week and review sight words. Independent math skills will be reviewed by each student.

Thursdays: we'll practice sounding out and reading CVC words from the letter we worked on during the week, read phrases or sentences with our sight word, word families, and finish/review the math skill for the week.

Example of our class time includes the following:
Week 1: Identify vowels and practice vowel sounds; write names on worksheets, learn to write Tt/Ll and practice phonics sounds with blend ladders. Count and write numbers 1-10; add with 1; CVC words include: "lit, let, lot, tot, tut." Sight word for the week: "of."
