US Grade 6 - 7
This is the second semester of a year long course, however, this semester can be taken independently as well. During this semester, students will read Bud, Not Buddy, complete a novel study based on the book, as well as write a literary essay. Our weekly discussions will focus on comprehension, themes, character analysis, and life lessons. We will also focus on poetry during this semester, learning both literary and poetic devices and using images as prompts to inspire poetry writing. We will look at different examples of poems for inspiration and understanding. * Note 1: This course is geared towards the 6th grade learner. However, advanced 5th graders and 7th graders that need extra writing instruction are welcome. * Note 2: ALL learners are welcome in my courses and this includes neurodiverse learners and visual learners. I always use slides and visuals when explaining the structures of essays and when lecturing. The only times I don't use visual slides is during book discussions as I find it nice for learners to be able to see each other while we engage in discussion.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their reading comprehension skills, their critical thinking skills and character analysis skills. Learners will also expand their understanding of figurative language and poetic devices through their work with poetry.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching language arts courses to homeschoolers both online and locally for six years. I have a deep passion for the written word and have been a voracious reader of literature my entire life. I love breaking down the process of writing into manageable steps and witnessing anxious and hesitant writers bloom into confident writers who love to write. I have led book clubs to middle school aged youth for years and have a particular enthusiasm for books that build understanding and empathy as well as appreciation for other cultures. I have had a wonderful time teaching creative writing courses, taking learners from the very beginning of character and world building, through plot planning, all the way to completing the writing of a full story. Some of my students have won first place awards for their stories in county fairs and local contests.
