Hello Frist graders!! Welcome to this ongoing first grade class, I will always create a positive classroom atmosphere where students feel successful and confident. We will meet four days a week. We will begin each class with Calendar, base ten, word problems, clocks or graphs. Then we will transition into math and reading/phonics. I don't know about you, but my 7 year old doesn't like to sit still for long, so I have incorporated movement into many of the lessons! I will provide extra optional materials for you each week to work on outside of class as well! One supplement will be freckle- it is a website that has your child take a little protest to see where they are, then it works right at your child’s pace and level! I will have games, worksheets, and hands on ideas for reinforcing the topics learned each week! I think it is very important for students to learn with and from each other, so we will practice using breakout rooms to share our ideas, answers, and strategies. When students are comfortable with each other they are less afraid to make mistakes and more likely to open up and participate! I will teach everyone how to use different zoom functions including, mute, unmute, chat, annotate and breakout rooms. They may need you near them for the first week or two, but the goal would be for them to be independently taking class after a few weeks! Here is what a typical class may look like: We will always begin with a "circle time" circle time will change as the year goes on and will include Calendar, base ten, graphing, weather, clocks, word problem and saying hello to our friends. After circle time we will transition into our daily math and reading/phonics skills My goal is to create a place where student love learning, and families feel supported. I'd love to share ideas that I am doing at home with my first grader, and allow you to share ideas too! I am really excited about this class, and I can't wait to meet you! **Classes will run from the first week of September - May with weeks off for fall, winter and spring breaks Weekly Schedule example: Week 1: September 4, 2023 Circle time: Days of the week, graph it, weather Math skill: Counting forward and backwards and Writing numbers 1-25 Reading skill: CVC short a and short o words, character and setting Week 2: September 11, 2023 Circle time: Days of the week, graph it, base 10 Math skill: Counting to 100, counting by 10 to 100 Reading skill: CVC short i, short u and short e words, character and setting Week 3: September 18, 2023 Circle time: Days of the week, graph it, base 10 Math skill: Counting to 120, counting by 5 to 100 Reading skill: Sh and Ch words, sight words, Fiction vs Non Fiction Week 4: September 25, 2023 Circle time: Days of the week, clocks Math skill: Adding and subtracting with in 20 Reading skill: Th, Wh words, sight words, comprehension with fiction/non fiction Week 5: Circle time: Days of the week, clocks Math skill: Comparing numbers Reading skill: -ck words, sight words, Fairy Tales Week 6: Circle time: Days of the week, clocks Math skill: Ordinal numbers Reading skill: L family blends, sight words, comprehension with Fairy Tales Week 7: Circle time: Days of the week, clocks Math skill: Create and extend patterns Reading skill: r family blends, sight words, sequence Week 8: Circle time: Days of the week, clocks Math skill: Order objects by length/weight Reading skill: s family blends, sight words, main idea Week 9: Circle time: Days of the week, clocks Math skill: Comparing numbers Reading skill: final s blends, sight words, main idea Week 9: Circle time: Days of the week, clocks Math skill: Reading skill: final s blends, sight words, There will be 32 weeks of lessons Standards we will learn this year: READING: Recognize components of a sentence ABC order Rhyming words Blends Syllables Beginning/Middle/End sounds Decode one syllable words Silent e Sight words Word Families Read grade appropriate text with expression Comprehend grade level text Listen to and retell stories Main idea, Problem and Solution, Characters, Setting Compare/Contrast Retell main ideas Describe/make connections Compare two texts Sort words into categories Write upper and lowercase letters Write sentences with correct punctuation, capitalization and spaces Nouns/Verbs/Adjective/Pronouns Collaborative conversations, listen to others, take turns Follow 3-4 step directions MATH Count to 120 by ones, fives, tens- from any given number Understand 10s are groups of ones Match and understand ordinal numbers Place value to hundreds Compare two digit numbers using < > = Mentally Find 10 more or 10 less Fluency with addition facts Counting on Relationships with adding and subtracting 8 = 5+ 2+ 1 Solve real world problems Add/Subtract two digit numbers to one digit numbers Add 2 digit by 2 digit numbers with and with out carrying Patterns in numbers to 100 Two and Three dimensional shapes Partition circles and rectangles into two and four parts - use words half, fourth and quarter Non standard measurement Tell and write time to nearest 30 minutes Identify penny, nickel, dime, quarter and a collection of coins Graphs

Hello! My name is Mrs. Neal! I am a licensed teacher in the state of Indiana. I have been teaching on Outschool for five years, teaching 3rd - 6th reading/LA and Math! I taught 3rd grade for 7 years, and loved every second of it! I always knew I had a passion for math, but becoming a teacher taught me that I also have a love and passion for reading and teaching kids to love reading! My goal is always to create a classroom where students feel valued, successful, wanted, and smart! I keep my classroom positive and expect kindness and respect from all students.
I am also a mother of three, two boys ages 18 and 7 and a girl age 14. I did step away from the classroom four years ago in order to stay home with my kids. We live in Indiana during the summer and go to Florida for the winter months - I love showing my students the ocean and allowing them to see what we have seen on our adventures during the week.
I am very excited to meet you and your student in class!
