課堂經歷

英語程度 - 未知
美國 1 - 3 年級
🌟 This class focuses on phonics, phonemic awareness, blends, segmenting, decoding, multi-syllable words, auditory processing, chunking, and spelling.

In this ongoing class, each meeting will be broken up into three distinct activities; Vocabulary Word of the Day, Guided Reading, and Word Attack.

We will learn a new vocabulary word each day and discuss how to use the word of the day in a sentence. Learners will add their own sentences using the word of the day to their journals. We will discuss vocabulary as it comes up in the text we are reading, as well as in our Word Attack (multi-syllable decoding) word list.

Students will participate in a guided reading activity designed to help improve their fluency and comprehension. Each learner will have an opportunity to read aloud and receive encouraging guidance from the teacher as needed. The reading passages used will be tailored to the needs of the enrolled students. If a learner is uncomfortable reading the selected passage, we can quickly switch to a text in which they are comfortably challenged. A variety of team reading techniques will be used as needed to help students build their confidence in reading aloud.

This class is designed to be a safe place to make mistakes. Learners are expected to participate, however, if they are uncomfortable reading aloud in front of the group, they may choose to pass when it is their turn. Please communicate your expectation for your child's level of participation to the teacher prior to the start of class.

Students will learn an effective and powerful multi-syllable decoding strategy during our "Word Attack" activity. This strategy follows the Phono-graphix method of teaching reading. I have been using this strategy for over twenty years in my reading clinic with phenomenal results. They will learn to break large words into chunks and blend the chunks together. Students will each have words to work on during this activity.

The annotate feature in Zoom is used heavily during the Word Attack part of the class. It is highly recommended that students know how to use the annotate feature before starting this class. Please note that Chromebooks do not allow this feature. Accommodations can be made for students to participate without using annotate, but most students enjoy the class more when they can mark their work on the screen and get feedback.

This class has enough new content for students to enroll in multiple sections during the week. For example, if your child needs daily instruction, you would enroll in the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday sections that meet at the same time, or at different times to accommodate your schedule. If you are looking for just two or three days a week, that works too. There will be different content for each day of the week so students signing up for multiple days a week will not be repeating the material. Students enrolled in multiple sections throughout the week will get new texts to read, new vocabulary, and new "Word Attack" lists each day of the week they attend.

Class discussion is welcome and encouraged. Microphones are only muted when listening to each student read aloud. It is important that each student has the opportunity to work through troublesome words as they come up without help from other students. I rarely have to mute microphones in my classes but I will mute learners if disruptions are not corrected with verbal warnings.

This class is ideal for struggling and reluctant readers. Students will apply the "Word Attack" skills they learn to challenging words they come across in the read-aloud text. They will also be encouraged to interact with each other and discuss the text. Students will learn to say things like, "I'd like to add to your point by mentioning...", or "I like how you added expression to your voice when you read as the villain", or "I was surprised by the ending, I was expecting...".

The class content will be presented with slides and shared documents of guided reading text.

Class content is designed so that students may join at any time. Each lesson involves the same three activities with new vocabulary words, word lists, and read-aloud text. They are scheduled in no particular order. The schedule listed below is an example of the vocabulary and Word Attack words we will be working with.

Week of April 1: Vocabulary Word of the Day, "survey" Word Attack List: consume, active, combine, construction

Week of April 8: Vocabulary Word of the Day, "malice" Word Attack List: straight, laugh, disappear

Week of April 15: Vocabulary Word of the Day, "process" Word Attack List: evening, holiday, bruise

Week of April 22: Vocabulary Word of the Day, "freight" Word Attack List: stretch, voice, except

I am a certified elementary teacher and certified reading teacher. I am offering this class to give students an in-depth study of how our English words are structured, and how to break them down into their sounds in order to make decoding easier. Once students have mastered the decoding techniques, they can more readily apply them to the guided reading activity.

I teach each lesson using the Phono-graphix method which I have been formally trained in by the program authors. I have been using this strategy with my private students for over 20 years and my students have had amazing success with it.
