Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This 24-week course is designed to give students ages 11–15 a strong foundation in writing using the proven, step-by-step methods of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). Using Structure and Style for Students: Level 1B, learners will progress from simple outlines and summaries to polished five-paragraph essays. Along the way, they'll gain confidence, clarity, and creativity in their writing—skills that will serve them well throughout middle school and beyond.

Each week, students will attend two 30-minute live video classes. Lessons follow a predictable, structured format to help students feel confident and focused. In each class, I introduce new writing techniques, model how to apply them using examples, and guide students through interactive practice. Together, we’ll use visual aids, live annotation, discussion, and note-taking to reinforce key concepts. Students will learn to use IEW’s stylistic tools—like “Dress-Ups,” “Sentence Openers,” and strong vocabulary—to bring their writing to life.

Over the course of the year, students will write across a variety of genres. They’ll retell narratives using a clear story sequence, summarize interesting non-fiction topics (like the blue-ringed octopus or carnivorous plants), and respond to literature, art, and film with structured critiques. By the second half of the course, they’ll move into research-based writing and multi-paragraph essays. All assignments build on previous lessons, helping students steadily grow in skill and confidence.

Between live classes, students will complete weekly writing assignments and apply new techniques at their own pace. I provide digital handouts, checklists, and clear instructions after each lesson. I also offer personalized feedback on student work, so learners always know how to improve and what they’re doing well.

My teaching style is warm, supportive, and structured. I work hard to create a low-stress environment where students feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions, and enjoy the writing process. Students are encouraged to participate in class discussions, share their ideas, and interact through guided practice. I’m always available during class to answer questions, provide clarification, and offer encouragement.

By the end of the course, students will have written a collection of well-organized pieces and developed the tools they need to tackle academic writing with confidence.
