Beginner Level
Does your child feel stuck when faced with reading longer words? Using a step-by-step approach, your child will discover how to decode words using proven strategies from the Orton-Gillingham* approach. Through interactive, hands-on lessons, they’ll gain the tools to break down words into manageable parts, one syllable at a time. ✨Course Breakdown✨ Day 1: open/ closed syllables, VC/CV pattern Day 2: magic e syllable, V/CV pattern Day 3: vowel team VC/V pattern Day 4: bossy r syllable V/V Day5: C-le syllable ✨What to Expect✨ Hands-on practice with virtual whiteboards and physical paper Daily reviews to build confidence and reinforce skills Extra practice words sent after class for mastery Engaging stories that incorporate new sounds and concepts Your child will leave this course equipped with practical decoding strategies that will make reading longer words feel less overwhelming and more achievable. ✨Who is this camp for?✨ This class is ideal for children who already understand basic phonics and can attempt to spell or read two-syllable words with *some* accuracy. ✨Why It Works✨ Using the Orton-Gillingham method, your child will benefit from explicit, systematic, and multi-sensory instruction designed to improve reading, writing, and spelling skills—especially for children with language-based learning difficulties like dyslexia. Give your child the skills they need to tackle challenging words with confidence and ease!
Learning Goals
Learn to identify and apply the (6) syllable types
Learn and apply the (4) syllable division strategies
Other Details
Learning Needs
All learners benefit from hands on reading instruction, but it is especially helpful in teaching concepts to those with dyslexia. We will physically take the words apart on paper to visually see the individual syllables.
Pre-Requisites
Learner should be able to read one and (some) two syllable words without assistance. We will spend our time practicing on two and three syllable words.
Supply List
For the first class, your student will need pencil, a highlighter or marker, and some index cards (any size or color) OR slips of paper about the size of index cards. For the rest of the classes, students should bring paper and pencil to each class, or a dry erase board with a marker.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
