Once students have mastered basic phonics sounds, it’s time to expand their skills by adding prefixes and suffixes to root words—unlocking new words and deeper understanding! 🔹 Build a Stronger Vocabulary – Prefixes change a word’s meaning or function. For example, adding un- to an adjective creates an opposite: unhappy, unfair. 🔹 Improve Reading & Writing – Understanding prefixes helps students break down unfamiliar words, improving both comprehension and expression. Each week, we’ll focus on a specific prefix, learning how it transforms words and strengthens vocabulary. Students will practice recognizing, understanding, and using these building blocks in reading and writing. Join us to boost confidence, comprehension, and word mastery! Learning Goals
Students will master the use and definition of common prefixes as applied to vocabulary words as well as practice Orton Gillingham based syllable division.

Pre-Requisites
Student should have mastered basic phonic sounds and able to read one-syllable words.
Supply List
A ready-to-learn attitude, some paper, and a pencil or pen! (or a dry erase board) Index cards or similar type thick paper for making flashcards to keep -- I recommend punching a hole in the corner and putting on a ring for easy review.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Bachelor's Degree from Penn State University
I have over 20 years of experience teaching in my homeschool and more than 12 years of experience teaching ESL online—so I know firsthand how challenging English words can be! Learning roots, prefixes, and suffixes is a powerful way to expand vocabulary, which directly improves reading comprehension and writing skills.
In addition to teaching my four children, I hold a journalism degree from Penn State and am IMSE Orton-Gillingham trained in phonics and reading instruction. My goal is to help students break down words, understand their meanings, and become confident readers and writers.
