Join me as we examine the impact that European powers and the United States have had as they tried to spread their influence around the globe. This class will cover the Opium Wars, The Boer Wars, the Spanish-American War, the Open Door Policy, The opening of Japan, The British Raj, French Indochina, the Russo-Japanese War, and the Scramble for Africa. These events have shaped the world we live in today. 

This course will be taught using visual aids via PowerPoint in a lecture-based format. Students will be expected to ask questions and discuss as a group the material that we are covering. During the 50 minute class periods, students should expect to answer questions to check their understanding and participate in class discussions. The last week of the course will be the unit test which will be in the form of an interactive game of Kahoot. 

This is an introductory class, so it is a brief overview of the legacy of western imperialism. Students do not need to have any background knowledge coming into class!


Week 1:  Philospihes behind imperialism, Scramble for Africa, Cecil Rhodes, Zulu and Boer Wars 
Week 2: British Raj, French Indochina, Vietnam War, The Opium Wars, Taiping Rebellion, Open Door Policy, Boxer Rebellion
Week 3: The Opening of Japan, Sino-Japanese War, Russo-Japanese War, American Imperialism
Week 4: Kahoot Assessment
