What will be taught?  Students will select from two projects based on interest. Minimum project timelines are provided for each project. All projects may be extended at the client's request to increase the challenge. 

A) What types of organisms are in my neighborhood?  

This is an ecology project in which students learn how to classify animals and plants in their environment. Learners use pictures and apps to identify the organism and build a representation of their local ecosystem using power point, poster boards, or a related medium. Time commitment ~2 to 4 weeks

B) How does baker's yeast make bread rise? 

This is a biology project great for learners interested in testing different conditions to explore the role of yeast in breadmaking. Students are expected to present a detailed lab report including background research, hypothesis, experimental design, data and results, and conclusion. Time commitment - (4-to-6 weeks)

An emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving is emphasized in this course through the class structure, teaching style, and homework.  


How will I teach? In each session, I meet with the learner via Zoom. I present our learning goals and provide sequential steps of the scientific method.  Typically, I begin by defining the step and providing examples on how the step was completed in other related projects. The student is encouraged to interact and express thoughts on how the current project is related to the example.  To follow-up, I assign homework to ensure the student understands the concepts and principles learned in the class.  The homework consists of games to master terminology and worksheets to learn concepts.

How is your class structured? Students are provided a link to Google Classroom to complete assignments and upload the final project. In Google Classroom, the project is organized by week with assignments on key concepts, practice problems, and video tutorials on related topics. Students may communicate with the teacher directly through Outschool. 

Teaching style - Open discussion using question and answer format. The goal is to assist students in thinking through the steps of the question, formulating a sound hypothesis, troubleshooting experiments, organize data and results. 

How will students interact with me? Students will interact with the teacher weekly through Outschool via Zoom and through Google Classroom by completing assignments and receiving feedback.
