Homework
1 hour per week. Students should practice building with tiles and writing the words they have not mastered yet from the list posted in the classroom.
Assessment
Phonogram cards, sound cards, key cards, and word cards will be reviewed weekly to determine mastery. Mastery will be evaluated when students write words, phrases, and sentences with the phonograms that have been taught. Students progress will also be assessed during the final week of the course.

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner Level
All About Spelling uses multisensory learning. Kinesthetic learning includes building words with letter tiles, finger spelling on surfaces, and writing words, phrases, and sentences. Visual learning includes watching direct instruction of spelling concepts with the colored tiles, seeing the words written down, and looking at the review cards. Auditory learning includes verbally reviewing the review cards, segmenting words out loud, and saying the phonogram's sound as it is written. 

Students should have completed All About Spelling Level One Steps 1-19 before continuing with this class.

During the first week we will review the phonograms, sound cards, key cards, and word cards from steps 1-19.  Students will learn the phonogram NK and how to spell compound words and plural words. We will learn about long vowel sounds. Students will discover how long and short vowel sounds are related to whether a word has an open or closed syllable.

Each week I will incorporate the following activities into our lessons:
1. We will review the phonogram cards, sound cards, key cards, and word cards.
2. I will introduce a new spelling concept through direct modeling with the letter tiles. This will be followed by guided practice with the tiles. Then students will independently practice the phonogram or spelling concept with an activity, by writing on themed cards, and by writing on a whiteboard. Finally, students will apply the new phonogram or spelling concept by using it in a phrase or sentence.
3. I will assess your child's progress through his/her understanding of the phonogram cards, sound cards, key cards, and word cards. Also mastery will be determined through his/her demonstration of the spelling concept while building with the tiles or writing the words.

Lesson 1:
The Phonogram NK
 We will review the phonogram and key cards. I will introduce the NK consonant team and the vowels that are used with it. Students will build NK words with their tiles. They will write words on their word search and then find them if they wish.

Lesson 2:
The Consonant Team NK
 We will review the sound cards and word cards.  They will write words on the fruit cards and then feed them to the skunk. Students will write words on different parts of the skunk and then assemble it if they wish.

Lesson 3:
Compound Words
 We will review the phonogram and key cards. Students will write phrases and sentences with words that contain NK. I will introduce compound words and students will build compound words with their tiles. They will write phrases that contain compound words.

Lesson 4:
Memory Game
 We will review the sound cards and word cards.  Students will write compound words on the playing cards and then play a game of memory with the cards. They will write sentences that contain compound words.

Other Details

Learning Needs
Students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD will benefit from the Orton-Gillingham style instruction.
Pre-Requisites
Students should have completed most of level one of All About Spelling or equivalent phonics instruction.

1. Students must purchase the All About Spelling Interactive Kit ($22.85) which includes the letter tiles used to build words OR the letter tiles app. The letter tiles app can only be used if the student has two devices, one to take the class and one to use the tiles app.

2. If you purchase the physical letter tiles, you will need a large magnetic white board and a dry erase marker. The magnetic whiteboard is so that students can easily hold up the words they make for me to see. If you purchase the letter tiles app, a small white board and marker is needed.
