1-on-1 Spelling Tutoring! Let’s Spell Together in a Fun Way: Ages 3-14 Spelling

Many schools have stopped teaching spelling due to the idea that students memorize the words for the test and then cannot apply them in real world applications. A comprehensive meta-analysis of experimental and quasi experimental studies have now proven, however, that spelling should be taught in the classroom. Teaching spelling is not the issue, but the way it is taught is where we run into problems. 

My spelling tutoring is different because I am not teaching the kids spelling words to remember today, but rather I am teaching them spelling words they will remember and use forever. We will go over phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and the orthographic connection. While many students can recognize a word when they see it, reproducing that word in order to spell it is more difficult. Visually knowing the word is wrong and being able to then spell it correctly is where we are running into issues. 

I will be using the Ascend Smarter Intervention program to work with ages 3 to 14 on their spelling. We will be working on sound–symbol knowledge, vocabulary knowledge, and morphological instruction. I will also be incorporating many games in my lessons so that students are having fun while learning. 

**An assessment will always be conducted during our first lesson to ensure we are starting at the correct level.
