✨General✨ This class is geared towards older learners who a good grasp on spelling and are ready to learn more about the why behind why we spell words the way we do. 📝Note to parents: Even though the age group says 9-12, if you have a learner who has trouble spelling, it is recommended that you look at previous levels as age doesn't matter as much as skill. Even though words may be easier, it's the skill that is important in understanding in order to apply it to spelling in all words. Please reach out if you have questions as to what level is best. 🌟About the Class🌟 Learners will be introduced to a spelling rule for their level as a whole group and will practice that rule with the whole class. The first few minutes of class will be spent introducing the rule and looking at examples. Learners will then practice spelling and sorting rules on their own as we discuss in class. Finally students will be able to independently practice some words on their own to apply the spelling rule leaned that week through a fun end of class game. Words will be posted in the classroom each week so students can continue to practice and apply each rule outside of class. 💥Here are the rules in the order they will be taught so you can jump in or leave at any time depending on what your learner needs: Week of: July 22: Week 18: ence/ance July 29: Week 19: ible/able Aug 5: Week 20: ery/ary Aug 12- (starts over at Week 1)- double the s at the end of multisyllabic words Aug 19- Week 2- Sometimes s can say /z/ in middle or end of words Aug 26- Week 3- iz is usually spelled ize with a few exceptions Sept 2- Week 4: sounds of ui - /oo/, long i, short i Sept 9- Week 5: short u spelled ou, /er/ spelled our Sept 16- Week 6: plural words for words ending in ‘o’ Sept 23 -Week 7: ct /kt/ at the end of words and accents Sept 30- Week 8: -age at end of word says /ij/ Oct 7- Week 9: Sounds of /sh/ su, ci, si, ti Oct 14 -Week 10: - tion Oct 21 - Week 11: -sion and -cian Oct 28- Week 12: ex says /eks/ or /egz/ Nov 4 - Week 13: sounds of ie Nov 11- Week 14: Three sounds of ch - ch and k and sh Nov 18 Week 15: 2-1-1 Rule Nov 25- Week 16: unaccented or ar Dec 2- Week 17: adding suffixes Dec 9- Week 18: ence/ance Dec 16- Week 19: ible/able --Winter Break-- Jan 6- Week 20: ery/ary

Welcome! Greater Gains Tutoring was started by Julie Chamberlin when she embarked on her Outschool journey as a teacher about 2 years ago. Since then, her classes have taken off, so much so that she became an organization and added on some other teachers to help more students learn and grow. Teachers that work for Greater Gains Tutoring are highly skilled, most certified in Elementary Education with a background specializing in either reading or math. Having helped many students have successes and gains in their education, we are confident in our classes and our abilities to help your learner make great strides. While our group classes are tailored to meet individual students needs, private tutoring is also available upon request. You can count on Greater Gains teachers to provide classes that both ensure growth and make learning fun. Please reach out to us with any other questions you may have. We look forward to meeting your learner and seeing the greater gains they can make when working with our exceptional team of teachers.
About the Founder, Julie Chamberlin: I am currently a part time stay at home mom part time reading teacher that loves teaching. I have a background in Elementary Education specializing in grades K-6. I am also working on my Masters degree in Curriculum Instruction with a Reading Endorsement. In addition to Outschool, I currently tutor all ages and subjects in my spare time. I love teaching English to second language learners as well. As a homeschooling mama of four, I am able to combine my passion of being with my children and teaching together so it's a win win for everyone! When I have free time, you can find me reading a book, listening to music, or playing the piano. As a family we also like watch sports, play games, and take walks together. Life is an adventure, and I love learning and exploring something new each day. I hope I can help instill that love of learning in your learner as well.
