Beginner Level
Many students struggle when it comes to mastering multiplication facts. For some students, drilling with flashcards and hoping they eventually "stick" can be a frustrating and very time consuming process. ✖️ Multiplication is essential for many other math concepts and difficulty accurately retrieving facts is a major road block for many students as they go forward. In my experience, all students can become fluent in multiplication, but some require a more scaffolded, strategy-based approach, which is what this course offers. 👇 1. Intro to the fact set and strategy 2. Practice using virtual tic tac toe/connect four games to match each set of facts 3. Kahoot fact quiz to check for accuracy What is fluency? 🤔 Math fact fluency is the ability to accurately and quickly retrieve math facts from the long term memory. Having fact fluency frees up mental capacity for generalization of math concepts and problem solving. Number Sense & Multiplication Facts 🔢 Multiplication facts must be rooted in a strong number sense in order for them to "stick". Students who memorize timestables without having a strong number sense are prone to making errors and are limited in what they can do. Students will learn that each set of multiplication facts is rooted in number sense or mental math strategies that they can easily access to retrieve the fact. For example, a student who is having difficulty memorizing 6x tables will be aided by knowing that they can use a 5x fact (that they can easily access with skip counting if not memorized) and simply add one more group. 📢In this class, I will demonstrate how to use effective mental math strategies to master each set of facts. The strategies systematically build on one another, so it's important to take the time to master each set. With repeated practice using games & quizzes, these facts will become fluent and the strategy will no longer be needed! How it works: 🔍 📽️This is a self-paced class which means there are NO LIVE lessons. 📽️ Each lesson will include 1 video and simple follow-up activities including a virtual game, Kahoot quiz and/or multiplication game using a deck of cards for practice. Check out the syllabus for a detailed overview of each lesson. Retrieval practice and repetition are key for retention of number facts and strategies, so that will be built into each lesson. The self-paced class format allows students to work at their own pace and review lessons whenever needed. For example, if your child is having difficulty with 2, 5, and 10x facts, stick with that for a little while before moving to the next group of facts. I welcome questions from parents and students along the way. I'm always happy to provide support if your child is having difficulty with a lesson or activity.
Learning Goals
Learners will independently master their multiplication facts through to 10x with the support of instructional videos and repetitive practice with the encouraged games.
Syllabus
6 Lessons
over 6 WeeksLesson 1:
Skip Counting & Doubles Addition Strategies
This first lesson will take you through the steps to use skip counting and doubles addition facts to master 2x, 5x, and 10x multiplication facts. I'll share a virtual tic tac toe and Kahoot quiz for practice!
Lesson 2:
4x Doubling Strategy
In this lesson you will be introduced to the 4x doubling strategy, using your 2x fact knowledge. We will also review the facts we mastered last week. There will be a new virtual tic tac toe board to practice the 4x facts!
Lesson 3:
3x Adding on Strategy
In this lesson we will use our 2x facts to solve 3x multiplication by adding on another group. We will also review our 4x facts introduced last week. I'll share a new Kahoot quiz for practice!
Lesson 4:
6x Adding on Strategy
In this lesson we will use a similar adding on strategy as we did for 3x as we introduce 6x, using 5x fact knowledge. We will also do a quick review of all of the facts learned so far. I will share a virtual connect four game for practice!

Learning Needs
This self-paced class will benefit all learners, but the teaching techniques are geared towards those with difficulties in math, in particular learners with dyscalculia.
Pre-Requisites
Learners should have basic addition fact knowledge, which we will use as a foundation for many multiplication strategies.
Supply List
- deck of playing cards

Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
This is an area that I had difficulty with as a child, and I really wish someone had used this approach with me. I have had much success with students who thought they would never master their multiplication facts. This approach is especially helpful for students who have a learning disability in math, or a language learning disability such as dyslexia which effects this area of math.
