Does your child know all of the letters of the alphabet and their matching sounds, but they're getting stuck when it comes to putting those sounds together to read words? Decoding is the process of blending letters sounds together and is an essential foundational skill for learning to read. This self-paced class focusses specifically on building decoding skills with the goal of reading short decodable passages and books. This class is suitable for children who have mastered most or all of the individual letter sounds and are working towards blending letters to read words. This means it would be suitable for a young learner who is just starting their reading journey. It would also be suitable for a child who has already started learning to read, but is having difficulty and would benefit from reviewing foundational skills. Lessons will include explicit instruction in decoding, blending, segmenting as well as games and activities to practice these skills. We will also be reviewing letter sounds and printing letters. How it works: This is a self-paced class which means there are NO LIVE lessons. Each lesson will include 2 videos with activities to follow to be completed on your own schedule. Check out the syllabus for a detailed overview of each lesson. There will be a lot of review and repetition, as this is important for retention of phonetic knowledge and skills. The activities listed each week is when they will be first introduced, but you will see them repeated throughout. Students will be encouraged to share photos or videos of their work in the classroom for feedback. I welcome questions from parents along the way. I'm always happy to provide support if your child is having difficulty with a lesson or activity. The self-paced class format allows you to work at your own pace and review lessons whenever needed. If your child for example is having difficulty with blending 3 letter sounds, take time to build that skill before moving to blending 4 sounds.
