Let's Multiply! An Introduction to Multiplication

In this class, we will develop an understanding of what it means to multiply. Students will learn to apply the strategies of equal groups and arrays to solve a basic multiplication sentence.  We will read a story and notice the way the main character groups items in her surroundings in order to better understand how many items there were in each scenario. We will then apply those strategies to real life situations and students will model multiplication sentences with small objects to show equal groups and arrays as a strategy to solve a multiplication problem. This helps students develop a thorough understanding of the meaning behind a multiplication equation. This would be a good class for a student preparing to begin the study of multiplication or students that need support in understanding the concept.
