Students will be given a benchmark assessment within the first week and then continued progress monitoring assessments will be completed once every 1-2 weeks. Is reading a battle in your house? Does your child avoid reading or become emotional or upset when trying to read aloud? We all want our children to love books and reading, but children cannot love something they can't do! Based on years of research, we know that reading is not a natural process and is something that has to be taught explicitly. For some, reading comes easier and for others it can be a frustrating process. This class is for students who are struggling with reading and need support to build foundational reading skills such as: - phonemic awareness - phonics - blending - segmenting - decoding/encoding - letter formation Effective reading instruction should always include measurable goals. In this class, all learners will start with an initial reading assessment to determine a starting point and from there all lessons will be built based on their individual learning needs. In order to know if what we're doing is working, we will continue to use progress monitoring assessments every 1-2 weeks, which will be shared with parents as well. The assessments used are from Acadience Reading K-6 and include: - first sound fluency - nonsense word fluency - phoneme segmenting fluency - oral reading fluency Another key ingredient to effective reading instruction is finding fun and engaging books that your child is not only interested in, but that they are actually able to start reading themselves! In this class, I will introduce a variety of books until we find something that your child can get excited about and want to read at home in between lessons. This class is designed to support learners who have specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, but will benefit all struggling readers.
