Multiplication and division go hand in hand and building the connection between the two is an essential foundational math skill. If your child has worked hard to master their multiplication facts, but they are intimidated by even the thought of division, this class is the perfect place to start! We will follow a scaffolded approach involving the following: 1. An introduction to the concept of division and a quick review of multiplication facts 2. Practice using the concept of fact families to relate multiplication and division 3. Solving division facts using multiplication ⭐Students should have a basic foundation of multiplication facts before taking this class. How it works: 🔍 📽️This is a self-paced class which means there are NO LIVE lessons. 📽️ Each lesson will include 1 video and simple follow-up activities including a virtual game and/or a Kahoot quiz for practice. Check out the syllabus for a detailed overview of each lesson. The self-paced class format allows students to work at their own pace and review lessons whenever needed. I welcome questions from parents and students along the way. I'm always happy to provide support if your child is having difficulty with a lesson or activity. 👇If your child is struggling with multiplication facts, I suggest first completing this class: https://outschool.com/classes/self-paced-multiplication-facts-that-stick-using-number-sense-dyscalculia-PBxzW85c
Learning Goals
- Students will learn how multiplication and division are related in fact families.
- Students will be able to solve division facts by flipping them into known multiplication equations.
Syllabus
3 Lessons
over 3 WeeksLesson 1:
What Is Division & Quick Multiplication Fact Review
In this lesson we will look at the concept of division as shared equal groups. We will also do a quick review of multiplication facts. I will show students a simple multiplication game using a deck of cards and they will have access to a timed multiplication fact Kahoot quiz to check for fluency.
Lesson 2:
Multiplication & Division Fact Families
In this lesson we will dive into the concept of fact families and demonstrate how multiplication and division are related. I will demonstrate how we can turn a multiplication equation into division and students will have a chance to practice that with an online Figjam activity. We will also focus on becoming proficient solving simple division facts using 10s, 2s and 5s and students will be given a Kahoot quiz to check for fluency.
11 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
Solving Division Equations
In this last lesson we will be looking at how we can solve division equations by turning them into multiplication with a missing number. Students will have access to an online Figjam snakes & ladders game to practice solving missing number equations. They will also receive a final Kahoot quiz to test division fact knowledge.

This is an area that I had difficulty with as a child, and I really wish someone had used this approach with me. I have had much success with students who lacked the confidence and skills to be successful with multiplication and division. This approach is especially helpful for students who have a learning disability in math such as dyscalculia, or a language learning disability such as dyslexia.
