Class Experience

Unlock your creativity with Creative Design with Canva for Kids, a fun and interactive course designed for children aged 8-12. Over the span of eight classes, students will learn how to use Canva, a user-friendly graphic design tool, to create amazing projects like posters, cards, and more. 

Each session is one hour long, consisting of a 30-minute lesson followed by 30 minutes of hands-on practical application.

In this course, students will:

* Explore Canva: Understand the basic functions and interface of Canva.
* Customize Templates: Learn how to choose and personalize templates for various projects.
* Add Text and Images: Discover how to incorporate and edit text and images to enhance designs.
* Understand Design Elements: Get introduced to essential design elements such as lines, shapes, colors, and textures.
* Use Backgrounds and Elements: Learn to add and customize backgrounds and design elements.
* Share Projects Responsibly: Understand how to save, download, and share their creations while practicing online safety.

Each session combines engaging lessons with practical activities to reinforce learning and boost creativity. Students will also have the opportunity to work on a custom project, which they will present at the end of the course.

Learning Goals

Students will navigate Canva’s interface and familiarize themselves with its basic tools and functions.
Students will learn how to select and personalize Canva templates for various projects.

Syllabus

8 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Introduction to Canva
 - Brief introduction to Canva & graphic design
- Creation of a Canva account (with parental assistance)
- Overview of the interface

Application: Students will use a simple template to design a personalized name tag, learning how to add text and customize fonts and colors.

Lesson 2:
Using Templates
 - Search for templates based on different categories (e.g., posters, cards, presentations)
- How to edit text, images, and other elements in a template
- How to change colors and fonts to personalize the design

Application: Students will choose a template and customize it to create a personal poster, such as one promoting their favorite hobby or interest.

Lesson 3:
Basics of Design - Text & Images
 - Adding text boxes and changing fonts, sizes, and colors
- Using alignment tools
- How to search for images within Canva
- Uploading personal images
- Resizing, cropping, and positioning images

Application: Students will design an invitation for a fictional event, like a birthday party or a school event, incorporating text and images.

Lesson 4:
Design Elements
 - Explain what design elements are (e.g., lines, shapes, color, texture, space) and their role in creating visually appealing designs
- Color theory basics (primary, secondary, & complementary colors; mood/feel of design)
- How to use design elements in Canva (shapes, lines, icons, stickers)


Application: Students will design a poster for a fictional school event, such as a talent show, sports day, or book fair.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Parents will need to either create a Canva account for their child or assist in the account creation process during the first session. This ensures that each student has access to the necessary tools and features in Canva. Parental involvement is crucial to provide support and ensure the child’s online safety. Additionally, parents should supervise the use of Canva and guide their children through responsible online behavior and sharing practices throughout the course.
