Book Club for Advanced Elementary Readers!

Each month, we'll read and discuss a different upper-elementary novel! This book club focuses on extending elements of the text, blends in healthy discussion, and introduces more advanced literary terms and vocabulary.

As a fellow book lover and professional educator, book discussion has always been an important part of my life. However, when I discussed books with my friends, they just wanted to talk about the highlights and main events. If you're looking for an average book club, this is NOT it!

This club seeks to engage students in meaningful discussion about books while touching on literary devices like symbolism, foreshadowing, tone, and voice. It also will have activities that highlight different elements of the book - like a deep dive into the titan Atlas or the Dodo bird's real origin. If it's mentioned in the book, it's fair game!

The books chosen for this club are more advanced in nature and often sport upper-elementary or middle-school protagonists. They are chosen for their advanced vocabulary, student appeal, and clean content. As a parent of a gifted learner and a K-12 gifted educator, I know how difficult it is to find books for advanced elementary learners that challenge their minds but don't challenge our family values.

**Students should attend the first class having read approximately one-third of the chosen book.**

While reading ahead isn't "against the rules," please encourage your child not to get too far ahead, lest they risk accidentally revealing spoilers to the other readers. Please note that the student must acquire and read the first one-third of the chosen book before class begins. These books are widely available wherever books are sold or borrowed, as well as in e-book and audiobook format.

While each book is widely considered appropriate for children in this age range, please research the titles chosen to ensure it is a good choice for your learner. I highly recommend using Common Sense Media for research.
