US Grade 5 - 8
The Sunshine State Young Readers Award program is designed to increase reading motivation for students in grades 3-8. This book club focuses on the 15 books chosen for middle-grades learners; however, advanced readers in grades three and up may enjoy this book club, as well. Each week, we will have activities and discussions centered around the novel. There will be a specific focus on literary elements and vocabulary. Students are welcome to drop in for particular books they are interested in reading and can skip books that do not sound interesting to them. All students are encouraged to join the challenge of reading all 15 books though! Each book will be dedicated two meetings over two weeks (except for the August book). It is expected that students read half of the book before the first meeting and finish the book by the second meeting. Parental Guidance
Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. The SSYRA committee is comprised of 20 qualified school librarians located throughout the state of Florida, subdivided into two committees- grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. However, it is imperative that parents review the content of novels before allowing their child to read them to ensure they align with the values and beliefs you wish for your child to be exposed to.
