You've taken the beginner class, have some great ideas brewing, and you want to keep creating! We will advance our understanding of the terminology of board games while sharing our ideas and perspectives with each other in active discussion. The goal of this class is to create a more involved board game. We can step away from the templates and work now on our own design. This course will be MUCH more learner driven as each class will be different depending on what games learners are interested in designing. Every week I'll post a pdf capture of what we've covered the day after the class to make sure we remember all the great ideas we explored. 🎲Week 1: Come with your ideas! I will cover the Theme/Mechanism concept and we can discuss various ways this can play out in a game. 🎲Week 2: This week I want to start with a conversation around Balance in our games. If you are creating a PVP based game or any sort of competitive game, it's a great time to work through balancing your cards/components/actions and abilities to prevent run away leaders and overpowered scenarios. The second half of the class will be presentation of where we are at in our designs and what difficulties we are encountering. I encourage active discussion as game designers are notoriously supportive and great at helping each other solve challenges in our design. 🎲Week 3: Let's discuss prototyping. We can address your game design specifically and brainstorm ideas on getting it to playtesting. If you are already there, playtesting will be discussed. If you've passed this point, let's discuss the feedback you got. 🎲Week 4: This week is our wrap up week. I don't expect you to have a game completed at all. This is where we assess where you are, work on a timeline to keep your motivation up and ensure you have all of the documents you need (playtest forms, prototyping tools) to go forth and create! If you wind up at this point still working out a theme/mechanism/experience that is ok too. Game design is definitely not something that happens overnight. 🎲Onward! If you would like to join our Board Game Group at this point to keep in touch and keep bouncing ideas off other game designers/players, join our group! https://outschool.com/groups/board-game-creator-and-player-group-1FWjQLvq?sectionUid=f93481c7-c4e9-47ca-b31d-08e55593e09d&usid=a3PkcCab&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link If you would like to share your final product as a short video of the game play with some pictures and maybe even your rules typed up, that would be fabulous. Remember, everything we create in here is the property of the creator so if we are inspired by what we see, acknowledge what you borrow idea wise and keep your work original. *This class applies to the curricular requirements for Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies 6 B.C. 🎲Instructor: Ms. Yvonne, BMus. McGill University. Hi! I'm a Metis artist, musician and micro-farmer. My experiences range from 10 years with IBM as a field tech to professional musician. I am a songwriter and a homeschooling mum of two kids and my current obsession is board game design. I believe that child-led project based learning is the key to engagement. As an ND learner myself and a parent of an ND child, I believe connection and relationship are the first step in education. PBL or Project Based Learning allows us to incorporate all sorts of learning in one fun bundle of exploration.
