US Grade 5 - 8
This course is entitled, "Write On: Semester Course I" and has been designed to provide a plethora of experiences for younger students who lack the confidence or experience in writing three-paragraph essay formats. The dissemination of the course content will be delivered via using a PowerPoint Presentation. It will commence with students examining/reviewing the basic structure of an essay. Subsequent to the review, students will examine one particular genre such as Descriptive, Explanatory, Persuasive or Narrative types, and a corresponding exemplar in MOST cases. Then, students will be challenged to construct a related task that will be completed during the class session. Students MUST be able to work within the given timeframes without special accommodations. Students may elect to read their drafts aloud for a verbal critique at the completion of each lesson. This course has a duration of 16 - 24 class sessions depending on how it is listed. ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION: ` Students will practice writing about 10 different types of essays. ` This is a 16 or 24-day course. ` Constructed essay responses will be 3 paragraphs in length. ` Students will construct their drafts within the class session. ` Drafts will be verbally critiqued for content and strategies, not for grammatical errors. ` Each class will consist of providing coaching via exemplars, strategies & directions for construction. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` PLEASE NOTE: NO EXEMPLAR WILL BE PRESENTED FOR THE TRICKSTER, OLD WIVES & QUEST STORIES. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` COURSE SKILLS & STRATEGIES TAUGHT: ` Students will learn and practice the following types of essays: ` Descriptive Process ` Cause & Effect Compare & Contrast ` Persuasive Problem & Solution ` Narrative (Tall Tale, Fairy Tale, Trickster Tale, Myth) ` Narrative ( Fable, Old Wives Tale, Quest, Science Fiction) `Literary Devices - Imagery, Similes & Metaphors, Hyperbole, Aristotle Appeals ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` COURSE AGENDA for 16 CLASS SESSIONS ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` DAYS 1 - 4 Focus: Review Basic Essay formatting & construct Descriptive Essays Skills: Imagery, Similes, Metaphors ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Days 5 - 8 Focus: Construct Explanatory Essays Skills: Example & Explanation ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Days 9 - 12 Focus: Construct Persuasive Essays Skills: Aristotle's Appeals of Emotion, Logic & Ethics ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Days 13 - 16 Focus: Construct Narrative Essays Devices: Imagery, Similes, Metaphors, Hyperbole ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
