There are around 200 different kinds of owls! Did you know they are silent flyers? Come join us to learn more about owls! Students will learn about different types of owls, what they eat, where they live, fun owl facts, what an owl pellet is, and why scientists study them. We will go into more detail about what they eat by discussing food chains, predator/prey relationships, and how an owls digestive system works. I will be using an interactive presentation to teach the materials and involve students in the lesson. The presentation will provide students with vivid imagery, polls, opportunity for discussion, open-ended questions, 3D images, and interesting owl videos. I welcome all and any questions! Students will then get to dissect their own owl pellet with the teacher and other students. We will be using the provided charts to try to identify the various bones we find and figure out what our owls ate. Students may choose to glue their bones to the provided vole skeleton chart when finished. No previous knowledge required!

I am a biology teacher, an avid birdwatcher, and a bird owner. Owl pellet dissection is part of one of my units and one of my students favorite labs! I often hear and see a barred owl that lives in the woods next to my house. It is very exciting to witness these majestic creatures in real-life, although not so exciting for my pet chickens!
