Class Experience

Nature provides diverse opportunities for children to develop new concepts, engage in collaborative studies and to learn about the world around them.  The Art in Nature program™ encourages children to see the art in nature, to develop a sense of awe and appreciation and inspiration and to acquire experience working with an array of artist materials. This art & nature based program facilitates learning experiences for the child to see the elements of art and the principles of design featured in nature.    The Art in Nature Program™ is aligned with environmental education...connecting children with nature using the visual arts as the conduit.

Below is the weekly lesson focus with suggested materials

Week 1:  Class 1  
Lesson Focus:  Orders of Line- Straight Line
Materials:  Paper, white glue, small items of botanicals (flowers, flower petals, blades of grass, leaves etc.)

Week 2: Class 2  
Lesson Focus:   Orders of Line- Spiral Line
Materials:  Crayons or Oil pastels, paper, watercolors, brush & water


Week 3: Class 3  
Lesson Focus:   Order of Line- Branching & Curved
Materials:  Twine, or rope, or ribbons, yarn, pipe-cleaners, wire, etc... small branches from a tree or bamboo, botanical items such as long stems of flowers, palm tree fibers.


Week 4: Class 4  
Lesson Focus:   Culmination of Orders of Line- Spider Webs/Spiders
Materials:  Paper plate, air dry clay, paints (acrylic & liquid soap)


Week 5: Class 5 
Lesson Focus:   Patterns in Nature-Leaves
Materials:  Magnifying Glass, leaves, paper, crayons, pencil, watercolors, paint brush

Week 6: Class 6  
Lesson Focus:  Shapes in Leaves
Materials: Magnifying glass, paper, leaves, ruler, pencil or markers,* pdf in classroom


Week 7 :  Class 7
Lesson Focus:  Patterns in Nature- Flowers
Materials:  Magnifying Glass, selection of flowers, paper, crayons, or oil pastels



Week 8: Class 8 
Lesson Focus:  Shapes in Flowers
Materials:  Magnifying glass, selection of flowers, paper, oil pastels or crayons or markers, ruler, *pdf in classroom


Week 9: Class 9 
Lesson Focus:  Texture in Nature- Bark
Materials: Magnifying Glass, selection of bark, paper, white glue


Week 10: Class 10 
Lesson Focus:  Intro to colors--Color Wheel
Materials:  Oil pastels, paper


Week 11: Class 11  
Lesson Focus:   Color Expressions in Nature I –  Leaves
Materials: Paper, white glue or glue stick, variety of flowers, flower petals, and leaves, magnifying glass

Week 12: Class 12  
Lesson Focus:  Color Expression in Nature -- Flowers
Materials:  Paper, clear glue or glue stick, variety of flowers/flower petals, magnifying glass, acrylic paints, paint brushes, water-cups


Week 13: Class 13
Lesson Focus:  Color Expression in Nature -- Fish
Materials: Acrylic Paint, painting surface (paper, canvas or similar), paint brushes, water, table covering/ smocks, oil pastels

Learning Goals

Learning opportunities facilitated to help the child discover the elements of art and principles of design featured in nature. In addition, this program encourages children to explore and develop their creativity and imagination by introducing them to a wide range of natural materials and artistic expression.  The Art in Nature Program™ enhances pre- literacy skills by listening and working with language, as well as builds their cognitive, social- emotional and fine motor development.

Supply List
The Art in Nature program ™utilizes materials that are readily accessible in the child’s natural environment as well as materials that are sourced locally. Materials can be sourced by art & craft stores and from natural terrains; such as parks, and neighborhood outings.  A suggested material list will be provided as well as resources to find materials.

I have a Master Degree in Early Childhood/Primary Education and a Bachelor Degree in Child Development, active in the field for several decades.  I am also a National Geographic Certified Educator, and certified to teach the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP). Also, I am TESOL certified, teaching English as a Second Language. I am the Founder of Connecting Children to Art in Nature; educational business  that offer children and families services to connect to nature in artful and eco-friendly formats and perspectives.  I create educational design and curriculum for youth and families for botanical gardens, children's schools, private and public settings, nature centers, as well as lecture in universities and colleges presenting professional development workshops for educators. My class offerings on Outschool are inspired by various pedagogies such as the Reggio-Emilia and Waldorf practices and place-based, best practices in environmental education.  I offer traditional art studio courses, art appreciation, art & nature-based classes & programs, and environmental education.
