The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton Novel Study
In this 3-week live course, learners will read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, participate in class discussions over comprehension, and learn and apply literary elements to the novel. End of course will culminate with a narrative essay.

Students will work on a project throughout the novel as an assessment for proficiency of reading comprehension. Students will also write the narrative essay which will receive a grade based on a rubric.Class Experience

A novel study will be completed over S.E. Hinton's, The Outsiders. We will discuss literary elements, elements of a plot, motifs, themes, character development, and more. Class will be structured with some of the reading occurring outside of the live class time, but some reading will be read aloud by the instructor during live lessons. We will have class discussions regarding comprehension of the novels plot and themes. Students will begin class each day with introductions, discussion of the prior assigned reading, working through a small mini-lesson (analyzing text, motif, theme, characterization, plot, etc.), and will receive the reading and assignment for the following day based on the syllabus. Instructor may read some of the novel aloud to the students as well as allow students taking turns reading the novel aloud if they wish. Students will have time to begin their assignment prior to the end of class to allow for clarification and questions as well as potential whole-group work on an assignment. At the end of the novel study, students will be given two prompts to write a creative narrative essay that exemplifies their understanding of elements of a plot. Google Drive/Slides/Docs will be utilized throughout the novel study.

Reading accommodations will be provided via free YouTube read aloud links. Accommodated assignments will be provided, if needed. Narrative essays will be accommodated, if needed, by length, graphic organizers, sentence starters, and/or etc.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a timeless, classic coming-of-age novel based in the 1950s used throughout middle grade classrooms in the United States. There are multiple events of physical fighting between social classes, cigarette and alcohol usage, and profanity. Images from the movie may be credited and used in lessons. However, the movie, nor clips from the movie, will be shown.
