Class Experience
This class introduces students to a reading comprehension skills strategy that helps them develop an understanding for identifying the main idea and supporting details. During the lesson the students will be able to identify key skills in finding the meaning of the main idea with supporting details. The students discover why it is important to find the main idea with supporting details in both fiction and nonfiction passages. The students complete a graphic organizer and continue to write...
The students will develops skills in reading comprehension and determine the main idea of a text to explain how it is supported by key details to summarize the text with evidence.
As an elementary classroom teacher, teaching the students how to implement reading strategies is key to their success in reading comprehension.Helping students strengthen their skills in applying a specific strategy to annotate, identify the information needed for understanding ,and growing ideas about their reading. I have seen students achieve success and growth in the area of reading comprehension while implementing this reading comprehension strategy.
Optional: Students may print the graphic organizer as a tool to use on future assignments in finding the main idea and supporting details.
2 files available upon enrollmentThe students will complete their assignment through the Outschool portal.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will complete an informal assessment throughout the lesson to check for students understanding of the reading strategy and the new concept they have learned.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
I will present a lesson that I created for teaching the reading comprehension strategy- finding the main ideas and supporting details.
