Language Arts, Grade 2, Reading Comprehension, Grammar , and Spelling.

Students are introduced to Language Arts Skills from English classes for 7- 8year olds. Students are introduced to different reading genres, reading & comprehension strategies, and Daily Oral Language, including grammar and spelling.

1 in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. Students will be able to complete a review worksheet on a skill covered in class.
Assessment
Students will be informally assessed throughout the meeting time for accuracy and understanding of academic skills presents and given support to improve their understanding in the concepts covered in the class.

Class Experience

US Grade 2
The purpose of this ongoing Language Arts class is for students to learn new Language Arts Skills in reading different types of genres and learning new reading strategies to become better readers, writers, and spellers in a fun and exciting way. During the meeting the students will be introduced to a new reading passage  excerpts and a strategy. Then  a Daily Language Skill  in grammar and spelling.
   The class structure starts out with introducing a new reading passage and a reading strategy to go along with the reading. The students will have a chance to practice the new strategy.  Next, we will introduce the daily language skill and concepts related to second grade language skills. We will then have a quick Language activity to practice the skill of the day and  review  the elements of  spelling and word of the day.

Listed below is a sample daily class to give you an idea of how a typical  30 minute class might go.

 Students Meet and Greet:
    Essential Question/ Introduction to Goal
 Language Arts:( Reading)
Introduce the Reading passage excerpt of the day and the reading strategy
        Reading passage- Realistic Fiction  Excerpt from " Young Cam Jansen, By: David Adler 
                                         Strategy skill- Reading for the Main Idea. 
         Student read and apply new reading strategy.
Daily Oral Language: (Grammar)
        Review four types of sentences
        Students complete activity to apply and identify skill in grammar. 
Spelling and Word of the Day (Word Study):
       Students are introduced to words that have  long a sound.
       Students complete activity using long a words.
Conclusion: Assign an enrichment activity through the Outschool classroom
Learning Goals
The student will develop their second grade language arts skills in the areas of reading, grammar, and spelling.

 As an second grade elementary classroom teacher,  the daily Language Arts Class would always set the skills and activities for the day. The class time  would give the students a chance to learn a new skills and apply their knowledge of the skills presented. The meeting would identify if more instruction was needed in their base knowledge of the leveled skills.
