As an introduction to word study and phonemic awareness program I will assess new students phonemic awareness and knowledge with a quick informal inventory of skills through question and responses. I will complete informal assessments throughout the lessons. First, during the students active engagement at the beginning of the lesson. Then, during the middle of the lesson within building words for spelling, reading , and writing. At the end of the lesson, I will be assessing the students completed assignments during class.Class Experience

This ongoing second grade word study, spelling, and phonemic awareness class is presented to students who range in ages from 7-9 using multisensory strategies and some methodologies from the Wilson Based Reading Program (WBR) known as Fundations. In this ongoing word study, spelling, and phonemic awareness class the students will be presented and interact with one weekly lesson that will introduce a new word study concept/ spelling phoneme and review skills associated with the concept. Each new spelling and phonemic concept are taught in one lesson and does not build on the prior class. Students will be provided with a master high frequency word list in a digital notebook for second grade (once upon entering the class) then a weekly word study list and an activity page that reinforces the specific skill of the week. The students will need just a paper and pencil or their favorite notebook. We will write our words paper or in your notebook so, it is optional if you would like to print the pages of the weekly list or high frequency words. Our weekly ongoing class will be presented through a power point presentation and our bitmoji classroom where students will meet to conduct their weekly word study spelling lesson and complete the assignment. A typical weekly class and the overall structure of each class would include the following components: Lesson Introduction A review of random alphabet letter-sound recognition and warm up to phonemes. Student will echo/repeat sound letter phonemes with Echo the owl. Introduce two new high frequency words from second grade WBR/Fundations Program. Students will Sky write new frequency words - students highlight word on their list. New Phonemes and Skill Build new words with letter cards- Students participate in discussion in building words. Spelling and write new words- Student write and spell new words in their notebooks. Practice and Apply New Skills The class will complete an activity page associate with the new concept a word sort activity. The student will read a short passage or sentences together that builds fluency of the specific skill. As an elementary and special education classroom teacher, I have taught Word study Spelling and phonemic awareness through multi-sensory approach using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods. I have a level 2 certificate in the Wilson Fundations level 2 program. The program I taught was a school wide program and intervention program as well. I have seen students achieve success and growth with implementing programs that offer the multi-sensory approach in word study and phonemic awareness.
