Class Experience

Intermediate Level
In this 12 week course, learners will be making hand drawn 2D animations from scratch! We will be creating our own small stories and creating expressive characters to communicate our intentions and feelings to the audience. We will have in mind the 12 Principles of Animation as we pursue animating more complex characters with fuller designs.

I will be sharing my screen and drawing right along with students as we work through intermediate level projects! At the end of each class, each student will be expected to present their work for critique. There will be tons of opportunity for creativity and for each student to add their own style into their animations!

I will also be available for questions outside of class, though no assignments will be given.

Each project will be expected to last 2 weeks.

Weeks 1/2- Pushing and Pulling Heavy Objects- characters will be expressing how heavy or light objects in their environment are.

Weeks 3/4- Slow, Medium, FAST- walking, jogging, running, and changing speeds in between!

Weeks 5/6- Exaggerated Expressions in the Face and Body- how to make sad or happy characters even more sad or happy!

Weeks 7/8- Animating in Confusing Perspective/Foreshortening- how to animate from a top or bottom view.

Weeks 9/10- Water, Fire, Earth, Air- how to animate elements in the environment.

Weeks 11/12- Falling and Getting Hit- reacting to objects hitting the character's body.
Learning Goals
Learners will be guided by the 12 Principles of Animation as a basis, and then add on details of character design, weight, and expression in order to build their vocabulary and expertise in animation. By practicing these principles, learners will be better equipped to animate their own stories that will become more exaggerated, realistic, and appealing by what we practice in class. Learners will better understand what makes a great quality animation, and what to look for in realistic movements in order to incorporate them into their animations.
