What's included
Homework
1-2 hours per week. 10-15 practice problems are assigned after each session. Worked out answer keys will also be provided so that students can check their work and find any mistakes. Homework will take approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete on average.Class Experience
US Grade 7 - 10
In this flexible schedule class, the Algebra 1 concepts of Solving Quadratics will be taught. This is widely considered the most difficult unit in Algebra 1. My goal is to make it accessible for students who really struggle with math. Any questions? Message me! Topics covered: Week 1: Session 1-Finding the discriminant Session 2-Quadratic Formula Week 2: Session 3-Quadratic word problems Session 4-Taking square roots Week 3: Session 5-Factoring (also called factorising) Week 4: Session 6-Factoring and solving quadratics To keep things as organized as possible, I post the sessions for the week all at once on Mondays at 8 am EST. Recorded video lessons, announcements and assignments will be made through the Outschool classroom. Students will be provided with a handout for every session. In each session, learners will watch my pre-recorded video lesson and learn as I work problems and teach the different aspects of the concept. They may choose to "take notes" or to just view the content at first. Then, they will use this new knowledge to practice more problems on their own, but with a worked out answer key available so that they can not only check their answers but find their mistakes, if any, as well. Additionally, students will receive online quizzes that I have created specifically for this class. There’s a quiz for every session, and students will be given instant feedback when they submit their answers. Students may re-take the quiz as many times as they’d like. Students may submit their own follow-up questions. I’ll work to resolve any confusion, often through a video response. Since this is a flex class, students can participate during the days and times that work best for them. No prior knowledge of solving quadratics is required. Learners should be able to find the greatest common factor (GCF) prior to taking this class.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to find real solutions to quadratic equations using the quadratic formula, taking square roots, and by factoring. Students will also be able to apply this knowledge to real-life situations.
Other Details
Supply List
paper and pencil Optional but recommended: TI-30XS Multiview calculator (or other scientific calculator). This calculator is useful for Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, and Precalculus in high school as well as college Algebra.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Georgia Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
Is your learner failing math?
Does your teen say things like…
I can’t do math!
I’ll never get this.
I’m going to fail this math class!
I’m so dumb.
Well, you’re in the right place.
HI! I’m Mary Kennedy, certified math teacher, and I love working with students who struggle with high school math and doubt that they can do it.
I've taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and have more than 20 years of teaching experience. My Master's degree is in Learning Disabilities.
In my classes, students connect their learning to critical thinking skills (includes reasoning, analysis, and perseverance) and growth mindset (“I haven’t learned this YET.”).
I strive to make the math concepts accessible to struggling learners.
Help your teen regain confidence and learn the skills they need to pass Algebra.
Don’t let math continue to disrupt your family’s life.
About Mrs. K.
I do life in a tiny tourist town with my husband and three kids (when they're home from college).
Twice, my family has had the unique and wonderful experience of hosting students from Southeast Asia in our home and community. We have maintained friendships with these students and their families for several years now through technology, despite our geographic distance.
I love working with students from every country and encourage their language skills in my math classes.
