Class

What's included

24 live meetings
18 in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. 5-10 practice problems will be assigned on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Mastery Evaluation
Mini quizzes (4-5 problems) and tests are given throughout the course. I'll provide you with weekly feedback on your learner's progress. Tests may be re-taken once (alternate version) within one week of first test if parents request this. Higher score will count. A final exam is given at the end of the 2nd quarter and 4th quarter (not this class, since it's the 1st quarter). 70%+ average, on tests and final is passing for Algebra 1 credit purposes. Final counts twice. Message me if you have any questions!
Grading
If you'd like a letter grade or pass/fail, let me know before the last session of the course. See my grading policy for Algebra 1 credit in the section just above this one.

💥Confident Algebra 1 is actually 3 courses in 1!
1️⃣Personalized Algebra instruction - 90 minutes/week
2️⃣Customized Patterns in Algebra class - 45 minutes/week
3️⃣Study Hall exclusively for learners enrolled in Confident Algebra 1 - up to 90 minutes/week

📅Weekly schedule:
Tuesdays and Thursdays - 45 minute 1:1 live Algebra lesson with Mrs. Kennedy
Wednesdays - 45 minute 1:1 live Patterns class with Mrs. Kennedy

🌟Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays - office hours with Mrs. Kennedy
-These are 30 minute bonus, small group "study hall" type sessions that you'll sign up for after enrolling in this course.
-I'll send you a code to enroll at no additional cost.
-These sessions are optional--your learner is not required to attend--but they are available to attend any time that your learner needs help with the assigned work or understanding the skills for the week.

🧩More about the Patterns in Algebra class on Wednesdays
-Through a series of problems that often feel more like puzzles or brain teasers than math, learners are able to begin to see patterns that are common in Algebra.
-The Patterns in Algebra course helps teens to think algebraically, using math reasoning and critical thinking skills.
-I customize this class to your learner's needs and abilities.

💭What to Expect:
📝Scaffolded instruction. During each session, we'll start with more support and gradually work towards more independent problem-solving, ensuring a smooth learning curve.
🧠Daily practice (5-10 problems) outside of the live 45 minute session time.
⭐Weekly assessments: Depending on the week, this may be a quiz (4 or 5 problems), test over the previous main topics, or the semester final.
✅Feedback and support. I’ll send you and your learner a weekly progress update (covering attendance, engagement, and understanding) so that we’re all on the same page.

I'm here to guide your learner every step of the way.

❗Required expectations of learners:
1️⃣Keep camera on throughout each session
2️⃣Annotate on the screen during each session (Be sure your device allows you to do this.)
3️⃣Bring printed examples and required calculator to each session
4️⃣Be an active participant—you don’t have to know the answers; you do need to be willing to try

I’ve found that learners who do these four things (notice that none of them are math skills) have much greater success than those who don’t.

❓FAQ:
-What if my learner has to miss a session? Not a problem. I'll record an instructional video covering the topics we would have done together in class. Your learner can watch the recording as soon as it pops up in the classroom (usually within an hour of the class) and complete the homework using the recording.
