Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
🚀Does your learner need algebra help? The Patterns in Algebra course helps teens to think algebraically, using math reasoning and critical thinking skills.

👩‍🎓It’s designed for students who have struggled for years in math classes, who need to build their confidence in math, or who are taking or repeating pre-Algebra or Algebra 1.

🔍How does it work? Through a series of problems that often feel more like puzzles or brain teasers than math.

There are 5 types of activities.

📅Each week, we will cover at least one of these 5 activities, usually 2-3 of them.

1. Pattern Predictor--The first activity has a series of geometric shapes that form a pattern. Students will predict what the next shape will look like and sketch future shapes and notice details about the pattern.

2. Equality Explorer--The second activity involves equations. No variables are used; instead, students will figure out what numbers are represented by 2D figures.

3. Sequence Sleuth--The third activity uses sequences. Students will predict a future figure in the sequence or find missing figures within the given sequence.

4. Number Ninja--The fourth activity involves finding patterns among numbers. This is a great prerequisite skill for Algebra when it comes to factoring, especially.

5. Function Finder--The fifth activity uses functions and students have to find a secret pattern within the function.

🌟There are 3 levels for this course, and I will customize it so that your learner begins at the right level for him/her. As your learner progresses, I'll let you know when we move from one level into the next.

📝Learners will receive printable packets to use during the class time.

💡Learners will be given “thinking time” before discussion begins, and I’ll provide guided instruction as needed after some thinking time has passed.

✅Emphasis is not placed on solving problems quickly; instead, emphasis is placed on the process of problem solving and communicating thought processes clearly.

🎯My goal is to encourage learners that algebraic thinking is highly dependent on analysis, observation, and reasoning as well as the tenacity and perseverance they put into solving problems. They will see that they are capable of all of these things.

Is your learner failing math?

Does your teen say things like…

I can’t do math!
I’ll never get this.
I’m going to fail this math class!
I’m so dumb.

Well, you’re in the right place.

HI! I’m Mary Kennedy, certified math teacher, and I love working with students who struggle with high school math and doubt that they can do it.

I've taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and have more than 20 years of teaching experience. My Master's degree is in Learning Disabilities.

In my classes, students connect their learning to critical thinking skills (includes reasoning, analysis, and perseverance) and growth mindset (“I haven’t learned this YET.”).

I strive to make the math concepts accessible to struggling learners.

Help your teen regain confidence and learn the skills they need to pass Algebra.

Don’t let math continue to disrupt your family’s life.

About Mrs. K.
I do life in a tiny tourist town with my husband and three kids (when they're home from college).

Twice, my family has had the unique and wonderful experience of hosting students from Southeast Asia in our home and community. We have maintained friendships with these students and their families for several years now through technology, despite our geographic distance.

I love working with students from every country and encourage their language skills in my math classes.
