Class Experience

Throughout history, artists have used their work to tell the world about who they are. From Picasso to Salvador Dali to Frida Kahlo (and many, many more), artists have painted, collaged, sculpted and photographed themselves as a way of self-expression. Each week of this ongoing class we will do an art project paired with a poetry prompt that will tell the world a bit more about us. Art projects will utilize different mixed media techniques including collage, paint, and photography. Poetry will be written in a variety of forms such as list poems, prose, cut-up, and more. Learners may join the class at any point. A list of supplies students will need for each class will be posted in the classroom each week, and a general list of supplies can be found in the "materials" section below.

Week 1: Selfie collage and multi-verse poem
Week 2: Photography and list poems
Week 3: Geometrical painting and quintain
Week 4: Masks and pantoums
Week 5: Dada self-portraits and cut-up poetry
Week 6: Postcard art and epistolary poetry
Week of 7: Photography transfer and prose poetry
Week8: Collage art and bop poems

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit more about me as an educator! I have been teaching students of all ages from little kiddos to middle school, high school, and adult learners for over 20 years in various capacities. I have a BA in English from Western Washington University, a Master in Teaching from Evergreen State College, and a Master in Transformative Language Arts from Goddard College. I've taught in juvenile detention centers and prisons, in traditional schools, in online programs, at community colleges, in daycares, and even as a homeschooling mom! I've also worked as a director for several different educational programs.

I believe strongly in the transformative power of language and its ability to create change both within us as individuals as well as within our communities and society. I love when I witness a student find just the right words to express how they feel or come alive as they read a poem to a class! In my teaching I encourage students to find their own voices and use those voices to write about what matters most to them. I believe in meeting students where they are at and developing learning from their existing passions. I think everybody has the ability to be a writer, even if they don't know it yet!

I look forward to working with you and engaging in fun and thought-provoking writing assignments!
