US Grade 5 - 7
In this one time class, we will work together using prompts to write a special individualized poem. We will then talk about the revision process, and learners can edit their poems. Final drafts of the poems will be re-written and mounted on colorful paper to create a gift to give a friend or loved one! In addition to the handout provided prior to class, and some paper and a pen, students will need scissors, glue, and a color or decorative piece of paper to complete their final gift. *This class is inclusive of all winter holiday celebrations, and will not be focused on any particular holiday. Learners are welcome to customize their poem as desired. It is also inclusive of all family types, and welcomes students who want to gift poems to any important person in their life. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.*

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit more about me as an educator! I have been teaching students of all ages from little kiddos to middle school, high school, and adult learners for over 20 years in various capacities. I have a BA in English from Western Washington University, a Master in Teaching from Evergreen State College, and a Master in Transformative Language Arts from Goddard College. I've taught in juvenile detention centers and prisons, in traditional schools, in online programs, at community colleges, in daycares, and even as a homeschooling mom! I've also worked as a director for several different educational programs.
I believe strongly in the transformative power of language and its ability to create change both within us as individuals as well as within our communities and society. I love when I witness a student find just the right words to express how they feel or come alive as they read a poem to a class! In my teaching I encourage students to find their own voices and use those voices to write about what matters most to them. I believe in meeting students where they are at and developing learning from their existing passions. I think everybody has the ability to be a writer, even if they don't know it yet!
I look forward to working with you and engaging in fun and thought-provoking writing assignments!
